What laptop should I buy?

Episode 1376

Kathy from Laguna Nigel, CA
Laptop

Kathy is looking for a new laptop. Her Lenovo IdeaPad is starting to get a bit finicky. Leo says that the life of a laptop isn't really all that great, especially with the lower priced models. At this stage, she should make sure she has it all backed up. What is her main priority? Performance? Portability? Battery life? Price? Memory? Answering all these questions will help her hone in on what make and model she'll need. Leo recommends getting an SSD in it, and avoid the hybrid drives. They really don't do a good job at either.

Should I wait to buy a new iMac?

Episode 1375

Todd from Topeka, KS
Apple iMac

Tom wants to know if he should wait to buy a new iMac. Leo says that it may be a good idea. We're expecting new iMacs any time now, and there is an Apple Event coming in about a month. It'll likely have new processors, an updated screen, and USB-C and Thunderbolt connections. But performance wise, it really won't be much faster, if at all. So if he bought now, he won't be missing out that much.

What Android phone should I buy?

Episode 1374

Jenny from San Diego, CA
Google Pixel

Jenny is ready to upgrade her phone on Verizon. She's been thinking about the Google Pixel. Leo says without a doubt, it's the best phone on the market. The hardware is superb, and the camera is one of the best. It's pure Google and they update it faster than any other phone on the market. That makes it very secure. However, they're not only expensive, but they're also in high demand.

He should get recommendations from his teachers, but most of the stuff he'll need is on Windows. It's pretty solid and rather "Mac-ish." The biggest differences are relatively insignificant.

What iPad Pro should I buy?

What's a good printer?

Episode 1372

Nick from Moreno Valley, CA
Epson Expression XP-330

Nick just moved in with family and they don't have Wi-Fi! He needs a printer, though. Leo says that most printers that do wireless printing do wired printing via USB too. Leo likes Epson. Canon is also a good option. HP's printers are improved, but they only use HP printer cartridges now. Leo recommends going with Epson. And since Nick is going to be printing so infrequently, he can actually shop by price.

(Disclaimer: Epson is a sponsor)

What's an affordable wireless plan?

Episode 1370

Darryl from Costa Mesa, CA
Apple iPhone SE

Darryl needs a good, affordable smartphone and wireless carrier. He's thinking of the Apple iPhone SE. Leo says that the SE is a great option when trying to save some money. As for the carrier, none of the carriers provide great customer service, but it will come down to who has the best signal in his area. AT&T and Verizon will be the leaders, but Sprint and T-Mobile are very aggressive in giving out deals. Smaller carriers like MetroPCS may also be a good option, but the devil is in the details for data. So he should read the fine print on overages and base it on how much he uses.

Should I wait for the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus?

Richard from Poway, CA

Episode 1369

Richard has Verizon and his wife is looking at the new Samsung Galaxy S7 edge. Should they wait for the S8 edge/plus? Leo says it'll be announced March 29th and be available for a few weeks after that. But the reality is, it's probably not going to be worth waiting for. The benefit is that it'll drop the price of the S7 considerably. The edge is pretty on those phones but with a lot of glass, you'll need a good case for it.
