Why Does My Computer Wake Up from Hibernation?

hibernation

Episode 1570

Greg from Saratoga, NY

Greg put his laptop in hibernation, and when he woke up this morning, it was on. How did it come out of hibernation? Leo says it's common that if there's an update or some preset network activity (like "Wake-on-LAN"), the computer can wake up. A tremor can wake it up as well. As a rule, Leo doesn't recommend hibernation because it can confuse the operating system, causing issues when waking up. Just let it go to sleep. Users can log out, though, for security issues.

Why won't my computer wake up?

Episode 1518

Vicki from Realto, CA

Vicki put her computer to sleep and now it won't wake up again. Leo says the usual culprit is the power supply. She should try turning her monitor off and back on. She can press and hold the on/off switch of her computer for ten seconds. That will turn her computer fully off. She should unplug it for a few minutes, then plug it back in and turn it on, to see if the monitor will wake up. If it does, sometimes it can fall asleep and not get the signal to turn back on. Then shine a light on the power supply fan and see if it's spinning. If it is, then it isn't the power supply.

How can I get my PC to wake up?

Windows 10

Episode 1465

Don from Montana

Don has an HP machine running Windows 10 and it's having problems when it goes to sleep. Leo says that he should make sure "Hibernate" is disabled. That causes a lot of problems. It can also not wake up from regular sleep, and it's been a long-running problem in Windows that doesn't really have a fix. He could just set up the display to turn off but disable sleep. Most of the power being used is by the display anyway.

Why does my laptop display have problems after waking up?

BIOS

Episode 1446

Andrew from California

Andrew's laptop goes to sleep and when he wakes it up, it shows a broken up video screen until he reboots. Leo says it wakes up confused, and he's not surprised since it's Windows. But he's never seen what Andrew describes. It usually causes problems like this with Hibernation, but not sleep. That's why he recommends disabling hibernate. But sleep shouldn't do that since the RAM gets refreshed regularly. If his BIOS is out of date, that could cause it. But it's never happened to Leo. Andrew should also make sure his display drivers are up to date.

Why does my Mac have trouble waking up?

Activity Monitor

Episode 1176

Donna from Thousand Oaks, CA

Donna has a MacBook and it has trouble waking up. Leo says that could be due to her Time Machine external hard drive. She should try disconnecting it.

Sometimes Macs will wait until the drive spins up when it's asleep. OS X Yosemite has a safe sleep mode, which is a very deep sleep when the battery either runs low or is idle for a few days. It copies memory to hard disc and shuts everything down. It's like Hibernating in Windows, and it takes awhile to get going. Leo's not a fan.

Why doesn't my computer wake up after going to sleep?

Sleep Mode

Episode 1148

Mark from Villa Park, CA

Mark has a 2 year old computer, and after a few minutes it just shuts off. Leo says it sounds like hibernation is enabled on the computer and that means it goes to sleep. Sleep is problematic because it can have issues waking up. It should wake up, reload the memory from the physical disk, and be active. But all too often it has an issue with this process. So Leo recommends turning off hibernate.

Why do I have to keep unplugging and replugging in my PC to get it to turn on?

Episode 971

Gary from Los Angeles, CA

Gary can't turn on his computer unless he unplugs it, waits for five minutes, then plugs it back in. Leo says that if Gary is turning it off with the hardware button, the computer may be going into hibernation and there are known problems with a system in hibernation. He should disable that first.
