Calibrating TVs

Scott Wilkinson on Home Theater

Episode 1495

Scott has been reviewing the LG 55C8 OLED TV and he's pretty impressed with it. It has an automatic calibration utility, but you'd need the meter and software to do it. Once you have that, it will run the calibration and set your TV automatically. There is a bug, however, found by the gang at AVS Forum, but SpectraCal, the company that wrote the auto calibration app, is fixing it. The bug only affects 100% saturated colors, so it has minimum effect since content rarely includes colors that are 100% saturated.

Scott got to see The Martian in high dynamic range at a theater in Los Angeles. But the interesting part is that AMC decided not to show the film in 3D HFR. So if you want to see it in 3D, you'll have to see it in regular theaters. Scott believes that it has to do with sterilizing Dolby 3D glasses, and also because AMC has a contract with RealD for 3D presentation. So you won't be able to see it in 3D HFR, unfortunately. But even then, it's definitely worth seeing.

Scott joins to talk about high resolution music. He likes to go to AIX Records because they record original music with mainstream musicians. He's also up north for a few days and enjoyed the Monterey Symphony Orchestra live. Scott says that going live is like a gourmet meal while MP3s are like fast food. Listening to a symphony is unamplified. And the emotional reaction you get from it is amazing. Amplified can have a similar reaction, if it's mixed right. But all too often, it's too loud.
