Tech News

We’re getting closer to creating a magic bullet that can kill off Cancer Cells, and just those cells. It’s really unbelievable how close we are coming to these things. Bio tech is really interesting at the moment.

Service Pack 3 for XP is just a roll up of the patches that have come out since Service Pack 2. If you’ve been updating regularly, you pretty much have it already.

Service Pack 1 for Vista is going to change Vista. For example, Google was upset with Microsoft because Vista was indexing your files, but it caused problems with Google’s Desktop search client.

The EU is going to fine Microsoft again. It’s got to be a little frustrating for Microsoft. The EU thinks Microsoft is anti-competitive. Microsoft is also cutting the prices of Vista by 20%.

Microsoft is cutting prices only on the higher-end versions of Vista, and only for the upgrade version used to move from XP or another copy of Vista. The suggested price for Vista Ultimate drops to $219 from $299, while Home Premium falls to $129, from $159.

A study from the University of Iowa says that ignorant customers are happy customers. If you know little about a product, they like it more. The less you know about a product, the more you can engage in wishful thinking.

Hour 1

Q Julie in California - Requested URL Not Found

You may need to change the permissions on the site. You really need to harden the site down, to secure it. Use tough passwords… don’t use dictionary words, use a random mix of letters and numbers (for example: Nyfd73s%$2hd would be a good strong password).

You should probably contact your ISP and say you can’t access a certain folder. It’s either a permissions problem or they need to modify the .htaccess file.

Q Mark in Santa Anna - Imaging a TiVO

You’ll be pulling the drives out the TiVO and hooking it up to a second drive on a PC. Your Mad TiVO disk has the tools you need on it. You’ll need an exact image of the drive.

The DD makes an exact copy of the drive for you. DealDatabase’s Forums have excellent guides for doing this.

Second Question: Automatic Emailing

ACT has a system that can automatically email out notes. MemoToMe.com can automatically send out emails to people. Plaxo.com reminds you when people’s birthdays are coming up.

Hour 2

Q Julian in Los Angeles, CA - Mac Graphics Programs

Photoshop Elements is now available on the Mac again. It’s basically Photoshop but missing a few features. Pixelmator is a great tool, and they have a free 30 day trial.

Skitch from Plasq.com is another great program. Leo uses all these as they all do different things. Acorn from Flyingmeat.com is another great tool and that’s just $50.

KNFB Reader is a tool for Symbian tools that will read out text to you by taking a photo of text.

Q Gabriel in California - Computer Clock Error

It sounds like the Real Time clock is fine, it’s a Vista issue. It looks like Vista boots up, grabs the time and uses it’s own internal clock, and that’s inaccurate.

Leo doesn’t have a fix for it. Your real time hardware clock seems to be fine. You might want to see if it fixes it when you log out and back in.

There are programs like TClockEx will sync the time for you and should work with Vista. There’s also Dimension 4.

Q Paul in North Hollywood - Photo Gallery Tool?

Microsoft has a solution called “Windows Live Photo Gallery” that lets you do this kind of thing. There’s also services like Smugmug.

Extensis Portfolio is a very powerful tool. It’s network based and handles a lot of photo’s.

Q Chris in California - Converting Voicemail to WAV

There are a number of web based services that will do this for free. There’s one where you can have all your calls go through them.

The cool thing about that is the fact you can get your voicemail through email. There’s one that you can just forward your voicemail to. Try GotVoice.com. Another possibility is by using Skype

Q Randy in California - Vista driver issue?

If Vista can’t see the HDMI port, then it’s an issue with the driver. You need to be using the HP Drivers they provide on their website.

Hour 3

Q Carson in Orange county - How to get photos out of the iPhone

Use iPhoto to get the photos off of the iPhone. Synch the phone with iPhoto and then save the files out of the album. Megaphone is another application to use.

Q Mark in Fontana - Speed up wireless Internet

You will need to get an N wi-fi access point as well as N compatible wireless cards. A laptop that has only G wi-fi capability will not see faster speeds.

Q Amber in Marietta - Has FiOS and laptop is not seeing the router

Security software is likely to be running on the computer that is preventing a connection to the router. Try borrowing someone else’s laptop to see if it connects. Also look in the system tray in the lower right hand corner and right click and close out of any applications related to anti-virus or security. Norton Internet Security may be preventing the connection.

Q Ben in Calgary - How to do a podcast live as he crosses the ocean from the Canary Island via satellite

Live can be pricey. Use a satellite phone to record the podcast instead. Take a look at rozsavage.com for ideas.

Q Mary in Redondo Beach - Whenever she writes anything it capitalizes the first letter of the line. How to access the Internet wirelessly.

You only need to hit enter when you get to the end of a paragraph. There is no need to hit enter when you get to the end of the line of text like you would on a typewriter. The capitalization is happening because it is trying to automatically correct the line of text by using Word as the e-mail editor in Outlook. This can be turned off in the options. To access the Internet wirelessly you need a wi-fi card.

Q Arnie in Los Angeles - Best software to make an image of a drive

Use Drive Snapshot to make an image of a drive is a good solution. As long as the computer can see the drive that the image is copied to, it should be able to restore the drive. The software should be able to do incremental backups. Also consider off-site backups.

Q Denise in San Diego - Best computer to use with World of Warcraft (WoW)

WoW is not demanding on video cards. Best thing to get is a good display. Get at least a 24 inch display. If you want to play high end games you can get an SLI card, but not necessary for WoW. Core 2 2 gigahertz or better CPU is best, nVidia GeForce 9 series card is a good card to use. Bigger the screen the better. I use a 30 inch display for the most immersive experience.

Q Jim in Woodland Hills - Software to restore data from a flash drive

Flash drives do wear out. There is recovery software such as PC Inspector? but it is for Windows. For the Mac, you can use Disk Warrior which is $100.
