Are you addicted to the Internet? Sites like StumbleUpon are designed for people to just find websites. You just keep coming across new websites.
YouTube is another example. Once you start watching video’s on YouTube, you can’t stop. In some ways, being hooked is not too bad… you make new friends, and find out new things.
The Internet is becoming a Hive Mind. Look at Digg.com. It’s a site that is influenced by the readers. They vote on stories. The story that got the most Digg’s in the past year was the HD-DVD Encryption Key with 47,312 Digg’s.
Q Robert in Munich, Germany - Web 2.0?
There’s lots of services for Blogging that are free, and you don’t have to do anything.
Vox.com is a free service that lets you upload video, music and images and people just need to go to your username.vox.com to get to your blog. Vox makes it really easy, and only has small ads.
Vox allows three privacy settings:
Blogger is another service that was bought by Google, and that’s instantly added to Google’s links.
is another that lets you quickly upload video and images.
Wordpress.com is a hosted blogging service powered by the powerful Wordpress CMS.
Q Hidey in California - External Hard Drive Full?
Treesize and SpaceMonger allow you to see what’s filling up that drive. SpaceMonger allows you to see the files as squares. The bigger the size of the square, the bigger the file size.
JDiskReport is also a very good tool and uses Java.
You might want to format the 500gb drive. It is possible for a bad guy to get on your system and use it as a file transfer server. If for instance the drive looks empty, then it could be a bad guy.
You want to make sure the drive is formatted to 500gb.
Q Jeff in California - Turning a blog into a podcast
All you really need is a good Microphone, and an interface to your computer, then you just record it, mix it down to an MP3 and release it on the site.
Software wise, Audacity is free, and it a great tool. Then for a Microphone, you’ll want to get a Plantronics USB Headset, or a Logitech USB Headset.
The next step up for recording in the field is a Shure SM-58 Microphone, and a Centrance Micport Pro. The podcast press plugin for Wordpress is great.
Leo uses the Heil PR-40 from Heilsound.com
Q Mark in Tustin, CA - Vista cannot boot
You should start with formatting the drive rather than throwing it out. It’s likely that there’s something bad that’s loading off of there.
You’re right, it sounds like it’s time for a new drive as it may have a short circuit or something.
Q Erin in Missouri - Video Mixer?
In a TV Station, they use a switcher. There are Software Switchers, such as Wirecast. That allows you to do CG, have Video-in-Video, and Green Screen.
SuperWebcam is free, and is great for things like this.
Wirecast lets you have multiple inputs, and it doesn’t require a system that’s too powerful. They even have a free trial to see how well it works out for you.
Q Rebbecca in California - Burning Video?
Your camera is outputting either Quicktime or AVI files. That’s not High Definition video. The nice thing about a still camera and the video it shoots is fine for short clips.
You’ll really want to get a better resolution camcorder. If what you’ve already got is ok, then that’s fine, if not, get a camcorder.
Adobe Premiere Elements will let you trim the clips, order them in a time line, and add effects. It’s easy to use, and you just drag clips to places. You can even add music, and you can even delete the audio from your video.
You might want both the music and the audio.
Q Don in California - Office 2000 Installer
You might want to try the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility. You may also want to reinstall Office after you have run this tool.
In Office 2000, you could set features to install upon first use and if the disk wasn’t on the drive, then it’ll ask you to locate the files to add the features. You should reinstall and tell it to install all features. It may be off an extra “bonus” disk they used to install. For example, Microsoft Photodraw Disk 4, or Office Disk 2.
Q Laura in California - Anti-Spyware
The best is Microsoft’s own product called Windows Defender. It’s better than Ad-Aware at this point.
It’s your behavior that’s important as these programs can’t always protect you against these problems. Don’t click links in emails, if websites ask you to download software, say no.
If your careful, then the anti-spyware is useful as a second line of defense.
Q Evelin in California - Error messages on websites
The errors are the server giving you these errors because the files don’t exist on the website. You need to send a link to the webmaster saying you are getting these errors and they need to fix these errors.
The server is saying it’s failed, but it could be anything that’s causing the error, so the webmaster really does need to fix it. There’s nothing you are doing wrong.
