Microsoft has purchased for $6B dollars, the largest deal that they have ever made, aQuantive, a digital marketing firm.

Do you use the Internet Explorer search bar in the corner? If you do, do you use the default Live Search, Google, or another search engine?

John Chow has a blog on making money online, and now makes $11,000 a month on ads.

On Wednesday, Engadget posted a story about an internal Apple memo saying that the iPhone was delayed until October, and Apple wouldn’t ship until 1Q 2008. Apple’s stock dropped significantly. The iPhone was shortly after approved by the FCC and is on schedule to launch sometime in late-June.

The Seattle Post Intelligencer may begin to print their newspaper on e-paper or flexible color LCD displays but not any time soon.

Blizzard Entertainment, makers of the popular World of Warcraft online multiplayer game, has announced that Starcraft is returning as Starcraft 2.

  • Routers share one IP from your ISP
    • A single computer has a unique IP without a router

  • NAT watches which computer sends traffic and routes the return traffic to the correct computer
    • Unsuspected traffic not directed to a computer, and the NAT router drops the traffic
    • NAT routers are really a hardware firewall
  • Steve still recommends a router even for one computer
  • Routers still won’t replace a software firewall but good enough
    • Lots of controversy about this
    • Casual users receive enough protection from the built-in Windows Firewall
    • People who want more control can use a third-party firewall like the Blink Personal Edition from eEye

    • Using H.264 video codec
  • Some viewers can’t sync podcasts to their iPod
    • Always have the latest version of iTunes and iPod firmware
    • Only a handful can sync the video
  • Leo doesn’t know why it isn’t working

  • Maintains a website for high school band
  • Started doing a podcast this year, interviews a band member per week
    • Has been capturing the audio using the line-in on notebook
    • Switched to DSP-400 from Plantronics
  • Wants to use both headsets at the same time
    • Only able to use one headset at a time
  • Best way to use two inputs is a mixer

  • Using a screen-reading program called JAWS
  • Uses Eudora for e-mail client
    • Eudora is discontinued
    • Mozilla is taking over development
  • Looking for an e-mail client compatible with screen-reader
  • Try Mozilla’s free Thunderbird client
    • Eudora may be based on this in the future
    • Cursor from the chatroom says that JAWS works fine with Thunderbird, though there are issues with scripting
  • Also take a look at Pegasus Mail

  • Using the Palm Treo 650 smartphone
  • Looking at the new Blackberry 8830 World Edition for Verizon Wireless
    • Based on the 8800 from Cingular
    • Some complained about the keyboard
    • Blackberry has better e-mail capabilities
  • Advantage of the 8830 is CDMA (Verizon, Sprint) and GSM (Cingular, T-Mobile)
    • Good for traveling internationally
    • Trackball takes some getting used to, but is better for navigation
  • Blackberry OS is much better than the Palm OS
    • Browser works great with web technologies
  • Blackberry Curve has a 2 megapixel camera
  • Leo has the 8700c from Cingular, similar to the 8800/8830

  • Wanted wireless in the home
    • Purchased Linksys wireless router
  • Interferes with cordless phone
    • Only on 2.4 GHz wireless frequency
    • Try the 5.8 GHz or 900 MHz models instead
  • Was getting cut off from the internet
    • Called Time Warner Cable thinking internet was out
  • Change the channel of the wireless router to a higher channel
    • Lower channels are closer to cordless phones

    • Running out of space
  • Needs a scratch disk for Photoshop
    • Photoshop needs a lot of space
  • Looking at a 500GB external hard drive
    • Makes no difference
    • Mostly the same
  • You pay a premium for LaCie because of the design
  • Most generic external drives use the same brands of hard drive
  • FireWire is faster than USB for backup, runs off port in some cases

  • Works by function
    • Sets everything for each task

  • Amadeus Pro or Audacity allows you to edit audio
  • Can’t separate dialog from audio

  • You can change the audio with markers in iMovie HD
  • Use compression to normalize audio

  • Bare or naked DSL is what she wants
  • Currently getting internet from cable company
  • Phone company is AT&T
    • AT&T requires you to be a phone subscriber
