QBob in North Hollywood - OS X Help is blank
Sounds like something is wrong with your help viewer. Read this troubleshooting guide.
He also wants to know what power settings are the best. The defaults do fine - unless you often find the computer going into low power mode while you’re working. In which case, extend the delay.
QDave in Whittier - pages are slow to load
Try a public DNS server
4.2.2.1
4.2.2.2
4.2.2.3
4.2.2.4
4.2.2.5
4.2.2.6
Make sure there’s not an IP address conflict

QYvette in Lake Forrest - fading a song out in Windows Movie Maker
Not sure if WMM will do it. Of course you could use an external WAV editor to pre-fade the song, or get a better video editor like Adobe Premiere Elements.
Noon-1p
QHumber in Los Angeles - WiFi often doesn’t connect
Make sure Wireless Zero Config is turned on (maybe restart it if it is). Right-click My Computer, then select Manage and look at the Services section.
QSterling in Ohio - convertible laptop for a student
He’s looking at Gateway’s CX200X convertible notebook. I like convertibles for students because they get the best of both worlds: a tablet PC and a notebook.
Make sure to get external speakers and a Kensington lock - both are dorm room musts.
Q Mark in Santa Ana - saving voice only MP3s
He’s using the free Audacity audio editor and can’t figure out how to create smaller MP3s. Open the Preferences, select File Formats, and choose a lower bitrate at the bottom. 32kbps is plenty for voice - you can go even lower if you don’t mind a little robotic quality.
QJesse in San Clemente - 15 inch Powerbook screen went blank
It works with external monitors. That’s good news, it’s not the video card. It’s probably a problem with the backlight or connecting cable. It should be an inexpensive fix.

why do MAC users hate PC? I know I do!!!

To keep people from having their newsletters blocked, they could register a digital signature with a trusted provider, and have the spam filters bounce the signatures with the trusted provider to prove this did come from the sender. This will make phishing harder. The trusted provider could ensure these digital signatures are sold to legitimate organizations.

What the heck is that?
Hey I’ve got a question. Does anyone know, if you install Windows XP on a Macbook Pro, how do you right click? Does it only work with an external mouse?

Jan?. why do PC users hate MAC!! conman23456?.
why do MAC users hate PC? I know I do!!!
Because they believe they are with the right team. People hate to be wrong. I myself run Linux and I hate mac and winbugs users. Starting that mac and PC are just hardware I can run linux on both. You really mean OSX or Winbugs :)

Just a general note:
MAC = abbreviation for Media Access Control, as in a computer’s Ethernet address
Mac = shorthand for Macintosh
For the caller who is having problems with Mac Help Viewer, Apple’s website says,
“Many Apple applications are not entirely self-contained, but rely upon “frameworks”. When these frameworks are shared by many applications, they are not contained inside the application. For example, many Apple applications that draw web pages or other HTML content use Apple’s “WebKit” framework. That framework is used by the Safari, Mail, Help Viewer, Software Update and Installer applications. WebKit is stored in /System/Library/Frameworks/WebKit.framework/ .
Some application versions work only with specific framework versions. If you have installed a newer version of an Apple application, it may have installed a newer version of the framework as well. Sometimes installing a Mac OS X software update will update an application to a newer version. If you later reinstall or Archive and Install that version of Mac OS X, the newer application’s are retained but the older frameworks are reinstalled. The easiest way to resolve the issue is to reapply the application or OS updates you previously had. If this is not an option, you should delete the application that is not working and reinstall the application or Mac OS X update you previously had.

A new iMac comes with the Mighty Mouse, which can do it (unless you throw it against the wall), or you can get a Logitech or MS Mouse that works just fine. $20.

I don’t like macs because of it’s monopoly. I have to use mac hardware, with a mac os with mac software. And they say macs are great because it just works. Dah, it better because mac ownz it all.

The ‘cable/router/ problem is most likley caused by having the Windows Firewall enabled. Two firewalls will cause this type of slow browsing; actually it’s blocking traffic. Turn off Windows firewall & it all should be fine. Also, make sure router is flashed to latest firmware.
Additionally, if he’s using A/V like Norton Internet Security, disable any firewall there.
That “click on the banner” add was quite annoying… never heard it on KFI before, and I hope I never hear it again.
Love the techy Barry White song Leo.
Dave’s modem problem may be he needs to tell the cable company he has changed modems. The cable company needs to know the new MAC address so his modem is recognized as a legitimate paying customer’s modem. Without this he may be experiencing limited connectivity.
I have a ThinkPad with built-in 802.11b, and in some hotels, it will not connect to the wireless network. If I get a wireless bridge and plug it in, it works fine. So it’s not a network issue, seems to be something specific to the ThinkPad…
i know leo says he would like to run windows 2000 than xp but if i am running 2000 then can i upgrade to xp without reformating and erasing all the data from my hard drive?? thanks
I tried Second Life but once I got in there I have no idea what to do! Don’t they have any sort of help or anything?
If you want to feel stupid try Second Life! They said I was supposed to find the greeter but she’s not online! There’s nothing to do but wonder around aimlessly.

I was unable to get a Linksys WUSB54G wireless USB working with the windows XP wireless monitor. It would connect to the network but it would not see the shared directories on the other computers or the internet. All other devices on the network are also Lynksys.
I tried everything to get this working including removing all evidence of any previous linksys installs from my registry since, like most software, it is not removed properly.
I gave up and reinstalled the Linksys Monitor V2, - the V4 update would not connect my WUSB54G device. The problem with V2 is the linksys monitor works for a few days or until the next Windows XP update and then starts to die everytime I transfer files.

To anonymous:
Read Microsoft Knowledge Base article #871122. It will show you how to get WinXP to recognize wireless networks after installing your router and adapter. It worked for me and all my stuff is Linksys.
I think you may be overcomplicating it Leo: if you go to -Control Panel -Windows Firewall then the “exceptions” tab, there should just be a checkbox for iTunes… no need to type in ports
Leo:
Compatibility mode DOES NOT WORK for Dos programs, only 16 bit Windows Programs
Make sure you have Send HTML messages turned on in the Options Menu. If you have selected Text Only Messages, Pictures pasted in the composition may be considered invalid, and gray out.
You have to insert pictures into Outlook composition from the menu bar for a 100% send success rate.
Remember a composed email message is like a mini web page being transmitted to another user. The picture source has to be declared, along with a valid picture file.
Outlook 2003 has more advanced features for creating email messages.
gawd, I hate html mail.
Then again, I cut my mail teeth on PINE, so I still dont understand why my friends who use aol or other services, feel compelled to send me cutesy teddy bears or other crap I really don’t need in my e-mail.
I found quite by accident that old DOD programs will usually work if you have XP installed over Win 98.
Of corse this could be too much of a headache for some people but it works on my machine I use for gaming.

I installed a Linksy Gateway last night now my PC says that a serious error has occurred and restarts??? Any thoughts.

Uninstall the linksys software.

You don’t need the software if you are useing Windows XP.
Most folks in my office don’t do much on their own. They pick up coffee for breakfast on their way to work in the morning & buy a sandwich for lunch. I think that some people don’t use tax software because today people tend to buy services rather than do things themselves.
Years ago I volunteered on a military base where I was assigned the task of filing out (pencil & paper) tax returns for soldiers. Instead, I taught everyone who saw me how to do it themselves. Most had only one W-2 and possibly some interest income. Even a basic rental property can be a simple tax return. However, income from multiple states and non W-2 sources can get tricky.

If you installed a wireless card in you PC. You will need the drivers for it to work If you are trying to get the router to work for your system you dont need the software.

Friends,
I just had FireFox do an auto upgrade the other night and now its DEAD in the water. I’m using OPERA right now to avoid IE. Anyone know what gives?
Hey, in 2nd Life I just started going up to people and asking them how to do things, most are pretty friendly.
And Leo’s 2nd Life name: Pruneface Spatula
I just reciently aquired from my friend a program called DOSBOX-0.63 Basically, it acts as a shell in XP and in that shell, looks and runs similar to DOS but allows you to use and run older games, avoiding the compatability issue all together. I have it now as a winRAR file, but i’m not quite sure if it would work for what you are looking for. Has anyone tried?
Outlook Paste problem
I have had the same problem. I noticed that when it happens if I go back and copy the text agian and paste it will work the second time.
Dave in whittier…
for your router problems try these
1st. only plug 1 pc into router and update the router’s firmware
(go here for some good input on the netgear routers)
http://portforward.com/routers.htm
2nd if its fixed and your router is ok then turn on each pc seperatly and test connectivity
3rd make sure all firewall stuff is off.
sometimes xp’s firewall is turned on even when it says its off.(ie dissable ‘security center’ and windows firewall
if the problem persists with other pc’s on
make sure your ip addresses are not conflicting.
4th make sure in the netgear setting DHCP is on
and check under “Mentainence” for upgrades and settings,
I use the Netgear MR814, and so does my roomie
he had your problem and we updated firmware
after that the ip address of the router changed automatically to 192.168.1.2
after that it worked perfectly.
(well as perfectly as dsl will run counter strike source ;]…)
hope this helps…

Dave in Whittier - pages are slow to load
Same problem here at home with 4 kids and wife on wifi. Kids are downloading and using bandwith even when not at home! Prove this to yourself by entering router firmware and temporarily disbling the wifi. (I believe you are hard wired connected).
You page loading and ping will dramatically improve!
Dave in Whittier - pages are slow to load
Try to assign the DNS servers manually and get the IP addresses from the DHCP. You can get the DNS addresses from the router status page. Currently you should be getting the DNS from the router cache. This will eliminate the DNS cache issues if there are any.

The problem with the router and the cable modem, I ran into a similiar problem with my ISP. The cable company increased the bandwidth in my area, and I would have problems surfing the net. As a test I hooked the modem up to the pc directly, and it looked like the problem went away. I hooked the router back up and the problem occured a few days later.
I finnaly got a tech on the phone at my isp who was able to tell me it was the modem. I had one of the old modems which couldn’t handle the upgraded bandwidth, so I turned it in for a replacement and I have not had a problem since.
