Kevin got some new equipment from his ISP and he can't seem to use his HP printer with it. Leo says that all of today's printers are WiFi enabled and Kevin will need to input the network information and password using the printer interface. If it can scan for the network, that would be easier. Input the password and he should be able to see it online after adding the printer in Windows. Leo also recommends going to HP's website to download the latest drivers.
Max is looking for a small and simple wireless printer that's easier to use. Leo says that most printers are wireless these days, connecting to the network. An inkjet is probably the best if one needs color, but understand that they'll need to use it regularly in order to keep the ink flowing without getting the heads clogged. If one seldom uses it, a color laser printer is the best bet, but the colors aren't bright and not for printing photos.
Tim wants to know if an EcoTank wireless printer can print from a USB thumb drive. Leo says most wifi-enabled printers have eliminated the need for it. But if you want to print without a computer, that's a good way to do it. From the chatroom - The Ecotank 7700 has a USB thumb drive for that purpose. You can also connect your camera.
Dan's Epson printer won't take his wifi password anymore and he can't update the firmware. Leo says Dan may have changed the WiFi password and forgot to input that new password into the printer. That's easy to forget to do. Leo recommends resetting your printer and then re-enter the WiFi password on your network setup. You'll also be able to download and install the firmware update. If that doesn't work, you may need to reset your WiFi password and start over.
Jeff's laptop is over 10 years old and he's ready to finally get rid of it. But there's so many choices for replacing it. Leo says it's important to think about anything out of the ordinary or unusual he'd want to do with it. If he has a specific software package that requires a certain operating system, that could help make the decision. Should he get Windows 7? Leo says that some machines come with Windows 7, including some from Dell. But Windows 8.1 is the current version and even though people hate it, it's the OS moving forward.
Mike has an old Mac that he dual boots with Windows XP. He wants to upgrade to Windows 7. Leo says to get the upgrade and it'll install on top of it. Use the Windows 7 upgrade install disc to wipe the partition, and then install it. Mike is wondering whether it will preserve his data, though. Leo says no. He should make sure he backs up his data first.
