Phillip is thinking about getting a Ubiquiti access point for his home network, or an eero setup. What router should he get? Frank has been watching Leo's podcast This Week in Google (TWIG), where he talked about wiring his home with Cat6 Ethernet. Everything is wired for better streaming and no congestion. It also included home theater equipment called "Araknis" which enables a tech person to dial in and fix anything wrong or set it up. Leo wasn't a fan because he never got credentials to do it himself. So, he had it removed in favor of Ubiquity's Unify system. It works great.
Frank was thinking about getting the Araknis though. Leo says it's expensive. Leo recommends the Ubiquity UDM Pro.
Travis wants to know how he can measure his bandwidth to see if he's getting what he's paying for. Leo says that Windows 10 has a bandwidth monitor built-in, but that will only measure what your machine is using. Modern routers also have bandwidth monitors, but if you've been given a router by your ISP, it likely won't. That's why Leo always recommends buying your own router. He recommends the Ubiquity Edge Router X. And you won't be paying a rental fee on that gear either.
Ken needs to replace his ASUS WiFi Router. He likes the router, but he was thinking about getting a Ubiquity model to handle the WiFi. Leo says you'll have to put it in bridge mode, but it would work as long as ASUS continues to update the router.
Dave would like to send his internet connection to another building on his property, a few hundred feet away. Should he use a WiFi access point? Leo says that's limited to about 150 feet. Leo says that the longer the distance, the slower the speed. A Ubiquity device is better because it goes point to point that directs the signal to where users want it. Melissa's Wi-Fi is really slow of late. Leo says that everyone is experiencing bad Wi-Fi these days because we're doing more with it and dozens of devices are typically connected to it. Congestion is a serious problem. To eliminate her ISP as the problem, she should connect directly to her router and see how it performs. If it's just the same, then she'll know that the ISP needs to fix the problem. But if it improves, then it's her Wi-Fi network.
