Scott got an email from a listener about a Sony X900F TV and wants to know if he can improve the picture quality and how. Scott says that there's a new disc from Spiers and Munsel called "UHD-HDR Benchmark." It's a 4K Blu-ray that will enable the user to calibrate and optimize their TV to the best possible performance without having to hire a professional. He also wants to be able to control his TV and his soundbar with the same remote. Scott says that is hard to do since their Sony remote is not a universal remote. Leo says you can maybe turn on CEC and it could control your soundbar.

Shane from Olympia, WA

Shane is a professional photographer and he connects his laptop to a big screen TV to show clients their photos, but the colors are always off. How can he fix that? Leo says that color graders will work in a 30% gray room because it influences the reflective nature of the colors, especially when his laptop is using True Tone. And a TV is not calibrated the same as a computer monitor. He could just get a larger computer monitor, like a 5K iMac, or, he could get his TV professionally calibrated.

Scott joins Leo to talk about how important it is to calibrate your HD TV. We've heard him say that time and time again, and Scott even travels up to t Petaluma to do calibrate Leo's TVs from time to time. But it's even more important with 4K UHD TVs that have high dynamic range or Ultra HD Premium. Some you have to turn on HDR Color to enable it. It's buried deep in the menus. Ideally, have a pro do it. But it's not cheap. Costs hundreds of dollars to get a pro TV calibrator to come to your home.

Scott got a question about tuning up a Vizio M60 TV. Is there a guide for doing so? Scott says it's a challenge to do that because different manufacturers have different nomenclature. But Scott did publish a few tips at AVSForum for that specific model. First thing is to take it off the "dynamic" mode that all TVs are set on to make them look good on the show room floor. Set the TV to the "movie" or "cinematic" mode.
