Steve has an old Gateway computer and wants to know if he can update to the latest Windows 10 Fall Creators update. It won't install, failing at 84%. It can restore the previous version, but he doesn't know why he can't update. Leo says that it should since Microsoft has opened it up to all computers now. But if he hasn't applied all the previous hotfixes, it may fail.
Frank is having trouble getting his PC to boot up. He's replaced the power supply, but it still doesn't work. Leo says if there's no power on self-test (three beeps), and the fans are coming on, then it's likely a dead motherboard. Can he just replace the CPU without the motherboard or vice versa? Leo says if the power supply is eliminated as a culprit, then Frank could try replacing the processor and see what happens. But before he does that, he should pull all the USB devices and see if they're the culprit. It could be a short in his USB hub. There's so many possibilities.
Bob has found that the search feature in his YouTube app has stopped working. He uninstalled and reinstalled it, and it worked shortly, but then stopped working again. Leo says that it could be anything from the app itself, to the service, to the iPad itself. Leo suggests talking to the genius at the Apple Store. Meantime, he should try resetting his network settings.
Brian is trying to play Leo's Tech Guy podcast using the Amazon Echo, but it keeps playing an old episode from TuneIn. Leo tried it, and it does indeed pull up an old episode. Leo suspects it's the fault of TWiT that may not have uploaded the most recent episodes. Or there's an issue on TuneIn. Another option could be to ask Echo to play it via YouTube or straight from TWIT.tv.
Ray uses a Chromebook and after a recent update, it won't play videos on YouTube. What happened? Leo says it sounds like the update didn't really install properly. A "power wash" of the OS may fix the problem. There could also be an ad blocker that's preventing the video from playing. Ray should also turn off hardware acceleration in the settings.
Alice is having an issue with her iPad going crazy during FaceTime. Leo says that the iPad could be overheating. She gets crazy colors and the video goes bad. If she exits out of FaceTime, however, it works fine. Leo says it may not be Alice's iPad. It may be her daughter's iPad that's having a hardware issue. It sounds like her device has a defective camera. Alice should have her call someone else with FaceTime to see if she can replicate the issue. She can even do that herself just to be sure. Then she'll need to bring it into the Apple Store and have a genius take a look at it.
Paul has had an issue where Microsoft was installing newer drivers during an update that he didn't want. Leo says that he can choose to not install the newer drivers when he runs the update utility.
Paul also wants to know if the Movo wireless microphone works well. Leo says it's a good low-cost wireless microphone, but he's concerned because the cheaper a wireless mic is, the more likely he'll run into interference.
Jim had an internet outage and now his Samsung Blu-ray player won't play due to copy protection. Leo says that's because that Blu-ray player is connected to the internet for copy protection to make sure it's not playing a pirated DVD. There's a tech note about that on Linksys' site here. It first appeared seven years ago and it keeps rearing it's ugly head every time there's an outage.
Tom uses his AirPods with his AppleTV and after a recent tvOS update, he has no volume. He called AppleCare and they said he shouldn't have that capability in the first place. But Tom says it worked just fine until the tvOS update. Leo says it sounds like Apple broke the connection in the update. That's terrible. It may be that he'll just have to re-pair them to the Apple TV. He should try another set of Bluetooth headphones or a speaker as well. If that works, then it should work with the AirPods since they use the same Bluetooth standard.
Zachary wants to play games and he's connected his desktop to his TV. When he tries to adjust the screen settings, however, none of the settings work. Leo says to try and change the settings before he connects the TV. The TV has a native resolution that is actually lower than the resolution on his desktop. He should check what his TV's native resolution is and then choose that setting that is as close as possible to it. He may also be in mirror mode instead of extended mode. So he should try and change that if he can.
