Will My Old Galaxy Phone Stop Working Soon?

Verizon

Episode 1791

David from Orange, CA

David heard that Verizon will no longer support 3G data, and as such his older Galaxy S6 mobile phone won't be able to support data. Leo says that's because Verizon is retiring their 3G and CDMA towers. David has some time though, as the retirement isn't scheduled to be concluded until 2022. But eventually, he'll have to upgrade his phone. But Verizon says the limit is the S4 or prior, so the S6 should still be supported for 4G/LTE. And there are a lot of modern phones that are affordable if on a budget. Some as low as $300.

Which Cell Service is Good in Buffalo?

Buffalo

Episode 1634

Julie from Downey, California

Julie's mom in Buffalo has very poor cellular service. They've tried just about everything. Should she try Verizon? Leo says that it's best to see what the local coverage is. T-Mobile, for instance, is very good in cities, but not in rural areas. Ask her neighbors. Verizon may be better, but they're more expensive. Spectrum, though, uses Verizon's network. In fact, check with MVNOs. They buy cell service in bulk and resell it.

Should I Get a Cheap Tablet for Streaming?

Alcatel

Episode 1608

John from Mangum, Oklahoma

John wants to know if an Alcatel tablet will be good for streaming video. He can get one for cheap from T-Mobile. Leo says the price may indicate a subsidized two-year contract. And if he's going to do that, AT&T is currently offering a free tablet with a two-year commitment. Stream it from the store to see. If he can get it out the door for that price, it'll also work with MINT, an MVNO that offers T-Mobile service for less.

Can I use a Verizon phone on T-Mobile?

Apple iPhone 4

Episode 1119

Steve from Glendora, CA

Steve was gifted an iPhone 4 and the carrier is verizon, while his carrier is T-Mobile. Leo says Steve can't use it because the iPhone 4 is a CDMA phone while T-Mobile uses GSM. So it's essentially apples and oranges. It's just not compatible. The new iPhones though are "world phones" and can use various SIMs. Leo says that's where it's going, especially for Verizon because they were ordered by a judge to stop locking their phones to a carrier.

Why did the price go up on the Samsung Galaxy SIV from Sprint?

Episode 1049

Priscilla from Newberry, SC

Priscilla has a Samsung Galaxy Epic 4G and she loved it, but it's broken and she needs a new phone. She hates Sprint, though. Leo says Sprint is horrible. But then again, they all are. Priscilla wants to get the Samsung Galaxy SIV, but the price on the phone went up by $50 recently, from $199 to $249. She wants to know who she would call about that, Sprint or Samsung. Leo says that since it's a subsidy issue, she would have to go to Sprint about that. They likely just changed their subsidy. Since Priscilla doesn't seem like a very happy Sprint user, Leo suggests looking into T-Mobile.
