How can I recover a deleted text message from my iPhone?

Episode 1300

Brandon from Redlands, CA

Brandon needs to recover text messages that he deleted from his iPhone 5S. Leo says that if he's deleted a text, there really isn't a way to recover it. However, his carrier will almost certainly have a copy of the message, if it used SMS (the green bubble), so he could try and ask them. He could also look in the Messages (iMessage is the blue bubble) app on his desktop. If he has text messages still on his phone and he wants to get them off, then eCamm has a utility to download them. Another option is the iCloud backup.

Why aren't I getting my text messages?

Episode 1259

Anna from Sherman Oaks, CA

Anna has a mobile phone and she's having issues with missing text messages. She's been told a reset will help. Leo says it could and it's not all that bad to do once in awhile. She should just make sure she's backed up all of her images, videos, and music before she does. Apps will just reinstall.

Anna should go into settings, and look for "Backup and Reset." This will backup her settings and apps. Then she can do a factory reset once she logs back into Google. It'll install everything and she'll be back up and running.

Why can I not get text messages from my friends?

Apple iPhone

Episode 1191

Leslie from Laguna Beach, CA

Leslie can send out group text messages, but she can't get replies. Leo says this is because she has an Android phone, and many of her friends have iPhones (they're blue, she's green). So they end up talking to each other via iMessage. Of course, getting an iPhone would solve the issue. It really comes down to who starts the group message, though. If they start a group message via iMessage, Leslie is left out. If she can get everyone to use WhatsApp instead, she'll be fine. But that's kind of a hassle. Or, she can just use her iPad.

BlackBerry Classic

Episode 1187

Steve from Dana Point, CA

Steve needs to upgrade from his old BlackBerry and he wants to know how he can export and save his text messages. Leo says it's possible to save text messages via SIM, but the SIM is very small. He could back up the text messages with the BlackBerry software, as well as third party solutions, but whether they will be legally viable after that is another story. Which is why Leo would recommend keeping the phone and sim as is and get a new SIM for the new phone.

How can I back up my text messages?

Episode 1184

Marti from San Juan Capistrano, CA

Marti has an old mobile phone from 2010 and is looking to get a new phone, but she wants to be able to get her text messages backed up. How can she do that? Leo says Marti's biggest problem is the age of her phone. There are apps that could possibly do it, like BitPim, but they're buggy. She could forward the texts to herself, or email them to herself.

She could also check to see if she can save texts to her SIM card. If she has that, she could save a few at a time and then move them over. But without a USB connector, Marti's stuck with forwarding her texts and paying for it.

How can I check my voicemail and text messages from the web?

Episode 1158

Ryan from Covina, CA

Leo says there's an app called Pushbullet that will deliver phone notifications to his computer through the web. Ryan needs something that direct his voicemails to his email, though. He has tried Google Voice, and that works for voicemail but not necessarily text messages, because those would default to iMessages on his iPhone. If he can get people to text him to his Google Voice number, then he can check those texts on the web.

Amy from Newport Beach, CA

Amy is having trouble sending videos to Android with her iPhone 6. Leo says the problem is likely with AT&T and it should be fixable. Text messages are handled with SMS, while video and photos are sent via MMS, or through Apple's Message. So it's likely Amy's MMS is misconfigured. Leo says to talk to a genius at the Apple Store and ask them to fix it.
