Is the Dell XPS Special Edition a good laptop for photography?

Dell XPS Special Edition

Episode 1744

Mark from Redondo Beach, CA

Richard is a photographer and is looking at a Dell XPS Special Edition laptop to replace his old machine. He is concerned with heat and throttling since it's an i9 machine. Leo says that many people think multiple core machines like the i9 will be faster. That is often not the case. In fact, multiple cores can slow a machine down if the software isn't designed to use them. But apps like Photoshop are designed to benefit from it. Just get as much RAM as you can afford, especially when using large images. The Dell XPS is a nice laptop though!

What's better for a budget laptop, storage or speed?

15t Value

Episode 1586

Richard from North Hills CA

Richard is in the market for a low priced laptop for $300-500. Leo says that SSDs are much faster and more reliable, but they are more expensive. Laptops with spinning drives are going to be cheaper and have more space than an SSD drive laptop. But sometimes they don't use an SSD, they use EMMC memory - the same memory on phones, so avoid that. It really comes down to how much data you want to store on it and what your needs are. Leo likes Thinkpads by Lenovo though as they're more though. For budget laptops, HP and Asus are good options as well to look into.

Why is my Mac running so slow online?

Episode 1271

Richard from West LA, CA

Richard has a friend who's Mac is running slower. Is that because her machine is getting older? Leo says maybe, but it may also be that her hard drive is getting less reliable. As the hard drive gets older, it starts to have to work harder to process data. It begins to cache data more. So replacing the hard drive, especially with an Solid State Drive, can make a world of difference in speed. Updating your OS can also help, though if it's too old, you may not upgrade to the latest (El Capitan). Leo says there's a few easy things to do like resetting your browser and clearing the cache.
