John needs a camera that will take better video in low light. Leo says that smartphones aren't really known for having good low light performance, but they are getting better. A camera will perform a lot better, especially if it has a larger chip. Full frame 35mm are the best in low light, but it's also a lens speed issue. The lower the f-stop rating, the faster the lens.
Mike has a Canon 20D with three lenses, and was either looking at a Canon 7D to keep the same lenses or get the Canon 5D and get new lenses. Leo says he could keep his lenses with the 5D, but there would just be a crop factor to it. If he's considering getting all new lenses, it may be time to go mirrorless with the Sony A7S.
Arnie saw that Leo likes the Sony A7 camera. He's got an NEX 7 and wants to upgrade to full frame. Leo says that the NEX is a great camera, but once he goes full frame, he'll never go back.
Arnie was just about to buy the a7s, but is wondering if he should get the A7 Mark II instead. It's got 5 axis image stabilization and that's a sweet feature. Sony just announced this new camera, and Leo doesn't know when it will be available. At the moment, it's just ad copy, there's no actual product to review.
Brian's wife wants a DSLR for Christmas. Leo says that sensor size drives what camera he'll really want to get. The bigger the sensor, the more expensive it will be. And it will tend to be bigger and heavier. Leo has a Canon 5D Mk. II that he rarely uses because it's so heavy. That's why he likes mirrorless and micro four thirds cameras. They are every bit as good, but they don't have a prism or mirror. They are lighter and simpler.
Chris heard the call from Caleb who wanted to know about shooting photography with Raw and he decided it was a great topic for today's photo segment. Chris says Raw is a topic that he always gets questions about. On the sensor, there are three color channels, red-green-blue. The sensor collects the light, converts them into an electrical charge and then processes it into pixels with a charge. The charge is what determines the color of the pixel. So you essentially end up with three pictures of the same image in red, green and blue. And then it's mixed up and saved into a Raw file.
Eric got to shoot with the Sony a7s and he thinks it's amazing. Leo says that the a7s makes Sony a dark horse in the category, and out of nowhere they've become a heavy hitter. It tells Leo they're more committed to the platform that they're coming out with this a7s. It's also less expensive than the previous model, the a7r.
Leo says that mirrorless cameras are more compact and they're really starting to take off with professionals. Leo uses the Olympus OM-D micro 4/3s. But for Eric's location work, the Sony a7s is ideal.
