Tom used the DISH App with the original Sling box and he loved it. But they don't use those services anymore. What is a good alternative for watching TV on the road? Leo says that times are changing. It's a great idea, but people aren't really doing that anymore. However, Chromecast is a good portable option. But most of the cable companies offer that kind of service. It's called OTT (Over the Top). These days, OTT services include YouTube TV, SLING, DirecTV Go. And you can always log into them online remotely and airplay.
Mike bought a Slingbox about six years ago and it worked great as he traveled the world. But now with iOS 10, it doesn't work. So now he has to bring along another iPad with the old version of iOS 9 on it. Leo says that's likely going to be the only fix. Dish bought Sling and converted it to a TV service. Now it's effectively 'end of life' for the previous hardware because they want people to spend $10 a month to stream it.
Ralph has been victim of the transition from Verizon to Frontier and he's looking for live TV alternatives. What about cable TV over the internet like Vstream? Leo says it depends on the source of the channels they bring. Many are either illegal, or foreign language TV. He could end up with soccer from Ecuador. It's not going to be ABC, ESPN or his local news. It really comes down to content. He'd really be better off going with Roku and then add things like Netflix, HBO, etc.
Jeff wants to know if the TIVO Roamio is better than any of the Slingboxes out there. Leo says he's used TIVOs from way back. He's even written books on them. The key to using a TIVO with your cable company is to use a cable card, which turns your TIVO into a cable box. The Roamio has a Slingbox feature that would enable him to stream live TV to a tablet or computer.
Daniel is wondering if a Google Chromecast would be a good way to get more content without buying more Dish channels. He also was wondering if he could get local channels. Leo says he wouldn't get local channels with a Chromecast. The Supreme Court's decision against Aereo, a service that would stream local channels for a small fee, it will be unlikely for awhile to get local channels online.
