off site backup

What can I do if my Carbonite backup is corrupted?

Cloud

Episode 1141

Kyle from Louisville, KY

Kyle uses Carbonite and he has been having corruption issues with his backup. When he tries to restore it, he can't because it's corrupted. Leo says that Carbonite has great support and they use "versioning," with their backups. They often have off site backups that he can't see. Leo recommends calling up Carbonite to ask them if they have his backups in deep storage.

That's a risk with backups of any kind. Hard drives can become corrupt. If he starts with a bad file, then there's really a tough road to hoe to get it back. But if anyone can, Carbonite can.

How can I eliminate duplicates before I do a backup?

Episode 1058

Val from Valencia, CA

Val wants to offload his data onto one large drive and "de-duplicate" his files. Leo says there are a number of programs that can do it, but it's something that makes him nervous because they have the potential to eliminate what it thinks is a duplicate when it isn't. A better way is to scan the contents with a redunancy check. Leo says that SyncToy is a good one.

Leo says he can keep the old drive anyway. Drives are cheap, so he could just use that as a backup.
