Shadow Copy

Why is My Backup Failing?

EaseUS

Episode 1622

Steven from Cranston, RI

Steven wants to replace his existing backup with a new one. He tends to use a thumb drive. But the backup fails and can't backup shadow copies or system restore points. Leo says that malware can be removed by anĀ AVS and that could affect the system restore points because the AVS expects his backup to be infected as well. Leo says that Shadow Copying is a relatively new thing that Microsoft has added, which runs in the background. Leo says that EaseUS is a good backup solution. Imaging is a good thing to do as well.

What's the best backup option for multiple copies of the same file?

Episode 959

Paul from San Diego, CA

Paul is looking for software to allow him to backup each version of what he's working on. Leo says that's called "versioning." Windows 7 has versioning, called "Shadow Copy." He can enable it in his settings, inside System Properties Control Panel. He should look for a System Protection Tab, and enable Shadow Copy. It'll copy to a portion to the local hard drive that he can then backup.

There are several third party programs that can also accomplish this:

  • Fileback
  • This is $55, but has a free trial.
