Stacy's hard drive is filling up after scanning a ton of photos. Her computer only has two USB ports. Does she need a hub in order to connect a USB thumb drive with an external hard drive? Leo says no. She should be able to plug them both in, and then drag from one to the other. But remember, if she deletes those images off the thumb drive, she still only has one copy. She should have three. Use Google Photos to upload them. Flickr gives 1000 photos for free. Shutterfly is free. And if she is an Amazon Prime user, she gets free photo backup as well.
Paul had a Dell XPS computer, then he got an iMac running Boot Camp. He hasn't been backing up since December. He changed the file structure when he moved to the new computer, and now his backups are duplicates instead of a select backup folder. Leo says he can tell his operating system where his home folder is in the partition. Once he's done that, he can delete the duplicates.
How can I keep two separate folders in sync? Leo says to use Second Copy by Centered Systems. It works great. The other choice is Microsoft's Sync Toy, but it's not very good. Russ will have to be careful not to sync deletions. If he syncs deletions, it'll delete whatever was deleted on the other one. He'll want versioning.
Juan uses a backup program called "GoodSync," which he says does a good job back and forth. But he doesn't backup to the cloud, to work and home. What can he use that he can incorporate into his current setup?
Brian was running backup with Carbonite and his hard drive crashed during the backup. Leo says that's bad luck and is likely a coincidence. Fortunately, Brian had a local backup. Leo says that a good backup strategy is what is known as a 3-2-1 backup. Three copies on two different formats, with one being off-site. Backing up and then deleting the original is not a backup. Redundancy is the key.
