Sam looked in the settings of his Netgear Orbi router and made a few changes. Now, many things he uses on his network don't work any longer. Leo suggests powering down the router, count to 30, and then power it back up. If that doesn't work, you can completely reset the router. There's a reset hole that you poke a paperclip into and hold it until the lights blink yellow. You'll need to reset it up and give it a new password, but it will be back to the factory settings. Also turn off WAN administration, and universal Plug n Play (UPnP). You'll be back up and running.
Jason called last week about his phone's screen freaking out. Leo thought it was the proximity sensor causing the problem. Jason did a factory reset and that solved the problem. Leo says that may have indicated a failed update. The first thing he should do when something weird happens out of nowhere is to do a factory reset.
Larry's Samsung Galaxy S5 is rebooting all the time. What can he do? Leo says his mobile phone company wants him to upgrade, but before he does, he should perform a backup and reset. It will erase the phone and reset it to the day he bought it. He should make sure he backs up his photos and videos before he does it. For that, Leo recommends Google Photos. That will likely solve the problem. If it doesn't, then it's time to get a new phone.
Stan has a bunch of Amazon Echo devices all over his house, but he's having issues with the one in his garage. Leo says that the garage may be too far from his router. He should try bringing it into the house and using it. If it works there, then that means he just doesn't have a good signal in the garage. If it doesn't, then the software may be damaged, and he can just reset it back to defaults to reload the software.
DJ is trying to help a friend out who wants to reset her MacBook, but he's worried that she won't be able to use her Microsoft Office software because she doesn't have the key anymore. Leo says that there's a system reset that won't break the connections of the software. So it could pay to try that first. If that doesn't work and they have to erase the hard drive, they could get the key from Microsoft again. It'll take a simple call.
Anna has a mobile phone and she's having issues with missing text messages. She's been told a reset will help. Leo says it could and it's not all that bad to do once in awhile. She should just make sure she's backed up all of her images, videos, and music before she does. Apps will just reinstall.
Anna should go into settings, and look for "Backup and Reset." This will backup her settings and apps. Then she can do a factory reset once she logs back into Google. It'll install everything and she'll be back up and running.
Paul has a NetGear cable modem/router and he suddenly can't access it to make any changes. Leo says that routers are really cheap computers and sometimes it can get bit-rotted just like any other computer. Paul should try doing a factory reset. Then he should be able to log in and re-enter all of his settings. It's a good thing to do once in a while anyway.
Steve has an old iPad 2 and it's slowing down a lot. Leo says that for an iPad 2 running iOS 8, the problem is that the demands on the iPad have gotten harder and it's not keeping up well. He could try resetting it and wiping out everything. But that may not help with the current iOS 8. The only real sure fix is to upgrade to a new iPad.
Some say that iOS 9 is going to be a leaner, more efficient OS, so it may be worth waiting until then. But at the end the day, it may be time to get a new one. Steve can try starting over first to see if that'll help for now.
John just wiped all his computers and started over. Can he do the same with his cellphones? Leo says that all cellphones have a reset command that will wipe it and bring back the base default configuration. Leo says while he's at it, he could update it to a more recent OS. But Leo also says that a newer phone would probably serve john better since SSDs can get sluggish over time.
Jim's tablet won't log into Google services, saying he's using the wrong password. He can log into it on his computer, though. Leo says that a factory reset would likely fix it, but absent that, trying a different keyboard could solve it. Updating the OS could help as well.
