Why does my mac hang up after updating to Mojave?

Episode 1535

Brett from Woodbridge, NJ

Brett just updated to OSX Mojave and hangs up on the login screen. Leo says clearing the PRAM or parameter ram can sometimes solve issues like this. Also, reboot with CMD R and that will enable you to reinstall the OS. Maybe it wasn't updated properly. If that doesn't work, Leo recommends making an appointment at the Genius Bar in the Apple Store.

Chatroom says to boot into safe mode, press and hold the shift key, and it will install the absolute minimum. If it works OK after that, then there's an app that isn't compatible that's hanging things up.

Why can't I connect to the internet with my old Mac?

Apple iMac

Episode 1512

Joy from Thousand Oaks, CA

Joy is trying to reset the password on her old Mac and she's having issues. She googled putting code into the Terminal and it messed things up. She found the original disk, but because it's so old, it automatically goes to the dial up modem when attempting to connect to the internet. Leo recommends going into recovery mode by holding down CMD + R while booting up. In the Utilities menu of the installer, there is a reset password tool. She keeps running into problems connecting to the internet, though. Leo suggests plugging the Mac directly into the router via ethernet and rebooting.

How can I make my Mac run faster?

Apple iMac

Episode 1364

Jeff from Pasadena, CA

Jeff would like to know how to speed up his Mac. Leo says to try starting up the Mac in Safe Mode and then go into the System Preference pane to see what's starting up in the background. Jeff can also try zapping the PRAM (Command + Option + P + R). That can make it run faster. He should also browse his System Extensions folder.

Jeff should log into his unused Administrator account and see if it runs faster. If it does, then he'll know something is running in his account that's slowing it down.
