Rose is having issues where her iPhone 8 screen just goes dim. Rich says that there is a sensor on her phone that will go dim if it gets obscured. Rose should clean her screen, or check that if her case is interfering with her phone's sensor. It may also be a failing sensor, so bring it to the Apple Store and have them run diagnostics to determine what's going on.
Mark has a Samsung Note 5 and needs to upgrade. He's on MetroPCS, but he's looking to move to T-Mobile. Rich says that since Mark bought an unlocked Verizon phone, he was bound to run into problems using it from MetroPCS. Rich recommends buying a Samsung Note 9 directly from Samsung. Mark will get a purely unlocked phone from the factory, which will be updated by the carrier when he takes it to a new carrier. But Rich says that T-Mobile does a lot of deals on things, and Mark will likely get the best deal from them.
Barbara has an iPhone 6, but she needs a new screen. Would the iPhone 7+ be a good upgrade? Or should she buy the newer iPhone XS Max? Rich says that the iPhone 7 is three generations back, so it could depend on the price. $425 seems a bit pricey compared to what the iPhone XR gets her. Also, a phone three generations back would have to still work with new apps that require more horsepower. So Rich says the iPhone XR is a better buy because she's putting her best foot forward for the future.
Mike has an iPhone and is using the Apple battery case. But he can never get the charge up to 100%. What gives? He took it to the Apple Store and the geniuses want him to reset, then set it up from scratch. Rich says always set up a phone from scratch, rather than restore the apps from iCloud. And if there's an app that's draining the battery, users are more likely to recognize it from scratch, rather than restoring from iCloud. But Rich also recommends looking to see if Mike's battery is affected by the recent recall.
Constance likes the "no blur feature" on her Samsung mobile phone camera, but after the latest phone update, it doesn't work! What can she do? Rich isn't sure what happened with the update, but she can do face tracking by using her finger to tap and hold on the face of her subject, locking the focus. There is also tracking autofocus in the camera settings. Look under the Bixby features setting icon. There's also a shot suggestions and optimizer feature.
Millie wants to know what the best mobile phone is. Rich says that the four best are the iPhone, the Samsung Galaxy S10, the One Plus, and the Google Pixel 3. Google's Pixel 3 has the best camera for all situations, but that's about where it ends. The iPhone is the best all around, followed by the Samsung Galaxy S10. More likely it comes down to what she really wants to do with it, and Rich recommends asking her friends and family what they have. Get what they have and she can always ask for help or interact with them easily.
Maria wants to know how to back up her recordings on her computer, so she can see them on her phone. Rich says that Dropbox is probably the best option. She can drag it into a folder on her desktop and it will appear on the Dropbox app on her phone. She can also do it with Google Drive or iTunes. If she is fine with paying money, WALTR is a decent alternative.
AT&T has launched its 5G service in 17 cities around the country, but Rich says good luck trying to use it. First, you can't find a map of 5G coverage to see where it's available, plus you need a $500 hotspot device to use it if you do. Also, 5G doesn't travel very far, requiring even more towers.
Meanwhile, Verizon has launched in Chicago and Minneapolis for everyone, but in very small areas. Rich says that while 5G is the future, it's just not the future now.
Becky has the Samsung Galaxy Note 8, and after a recent update, it's killing her battery after two hours. Rich says that sounds like there's a process running in the background that's wearing down the battery. Rich recommends getting rid of any app she does not recognize. Also, run a program called HTC Boost or Google's Files Go. Let it get rid of old files and then reboot.
