Why Can’t I Log Into iCloud With My Mac?

Edward is having trouble logging into iCloud on his Mac. It just "beachballs" and then returns to the login screen. He can log in using just about every other device he has, but not his Mac. He's using the latest version of BigSur, too. What gives? Leo says you can try signing out and then sign back in again from another device to see if it clears out. You can also try booting into safe mode.

Leo suspects, though, that there's a security app on Edward's Mac blocking the login. Malware Bytes, for instance, will do this.

Leslie teaches the blind to use computers, and one of his students is getting a popup for a "system optimizer." Leo says that it's a scam. Those popups are designed to get user credit cards by showing false positives from the Windows Event Viewer. The popup isn't actively harmful, but it is annoying. He can go into Programs-Features-Find PC Accelerator Pro and remove it. If it isn't there, then he'll need to Google PC Accelerator Pro Removal Guide. But be careful, some of those can be malware themselves.

Why is my mac acting up?

Carlin's email vanished from her Apple Mail email client. She uses MSN. But nobody has been able to help her get it back. The Geek Squad came out, installed Malware Bytes and scanned her computer, which Leo says is ridiculous since it has nothing to do with your email. Leo then says the first thing Carlin should try is to go to Safari and open up the msn.com website to check your email. Log in and see if it's there.

Ross is worried he may have been hacked after searching for the Quicken Support number online and calling them. Could he have gotten a phony number? Leo says never Google phone numbers unless you go directly to their website. Leo says that hackers will buy ads for specific search error messages, and it could be that Ross had been compromised after giving them access to scanning the computer. Leo says it would be prudent to scan his system. Before doing that, since Ross is very savvy, he could do a search with Malwarebytes first. Ross did and found nothing. That's good news.

Has my Browser Been Hijacked?

Greg's wife has an iMac running El Capitan, but now the Safari app just goes to Yahoo Safefinder no matter what! Rich says that there's some malware on the browser, likely an extension. Rich recommends Malwarebytes, and give the iMac a scan. Also, go through the apps and see if there are any that are unrecognizable. CleanMyMac is a program that can also clear out malware. Greg can also look for a browser reset in the settings, which will wipe out everything and start over.

Why is my printer printing out ads?

Steve's printer is suddenly printing out ads. What the heck? Leo says there's a good chance he got nailed by either a browser hijack, or malware that has replaced his printer driver. He recommends using Malware Bytes, by only get it from the original creator. The chatroom says that there is a printer exploitation tool kit out there on the web. It could be that there's malware in the HP firmware as well.

Sarah is worried she may have malware on her system. She ran malware bytes and it says she has 170 possible malware issues. Leo says that probably isn't the case. Malware Bytes will give false positives, or overreact to things in the browser it doesn't like. Malware Bytes can also slow the computer down. What really probably happened is that her browser simply crashed. Leo suspects that Sarah's hard drive is getting flaky, and is starting to fail. The good news is her computer is only a few months old and she can have it repaired under warranty.

Don is having issues with Malwarebytes. Leo says that if he's experiencing issues with Malwarebytes, there's a good chance that he's been infected. The first thing a malware creator will do is disable online security software and prevent access to those sites in the browser. That's one of the reasons why Leo doesn't like third party antivirus apps. Leo recommends using Microsoft Security Essentials/Windows Defender.

Does antivirus software keep PCs safe?

Alan wants to know if an antivirus utility is any good anymore for malware. How about on a mobile device? Leo says that all too often, an antivirus leaves people more vulnerable because most malware is a zero day exploit. Antivirus can't stop users from themselves, either. All antivirus utilities have to hook themselves into the OS at a very low level and the virus can actually use that as a door to more exploits. So at the end of the day, an antivirus really is only of limited benefit.
