Apple announced their M1 based Apple Silicon Mac laptops this week, including the 13" Mac Air, 13" Mac Pro, and the Mac Mini. Leo says it's the first generation, and that's causing many to wait. Leo also says that RAM is limited to 16GB because it has been wired into the logic board. Called Unified Memory Architecture, it's known to be faster. So maybe we don't need as much RAM moving forward as we think.

Macbook Air

Episode 1636

Mark from Tustin, CA

Mark's Mac Air is slowing down and he wants to know if there's an app like SpinRite that can run them. Leo says that sold state drives (SSDs) use TRIM, or wear leveling to keep your SSD in good shape.  It doesn't need to be defragged directly. But it will trigger the controller to run the TRIM utility. Search for TRIM in macOS. But it should happen automatically. If your OS is older though, you may need a third-party app to do it.

TRIMFORCE Enable is the command you can use in the terminal. That could speed it up.

Apple MacBook Air

Michael from Hollywood, CA

Michael has an older MacBook Pro and he's looking to get a new MacBook Air for DJing. Would it be sufficient? Leo says that MacBook Air with 4GB RAM should work just fine. But doubling up on the RAM certainly wouldn't hurt. Audio isn't that big of a power draw. The 13" MacBook Pro is a great option too, as it's thin, light, and has a gorgeous screen.

MacBook Air

Mike from Raleigh, NC

Mike called to ask Leo if he should put any money into his five year old MacBook or just upgrade. The connectors of a laptop can start going out after that time.

Leo uses 128GB models because he keeps most of his stuff in the cloud. But for most, 256GB is a good size.

What's the best laptop with long battery life?

Episode 1068

Earl (AA7EG) from online

Earl wants to get a laptop for photo editing. He'd also like one that has good battery life. Leo says that the MacBook Air gets up to 13 hours of battery life. Even if he's doing a lot of photo editing, that's still about 8-10 hours.

How much RAM should he get? For most things, 4GB is fine. But if he's going to do RAW, where the size of the images is 27-28 MB per file, then maybe doubling the RAM would be a good idea.

What computer should I get to replace my old Windows XP machine?

Acer Chromebook

Episode 1065

Leo says that Mac supports Office, and although it's more expensive, a quality PC will cost about the same anyway. Another idea is the Google Chromebook, with costs ranging from about $200 to $500. She can then use Google Docs which is just as good as Microsoft Office and she wouldn't have to buy it. A great choice, but it's a very simple computer.

MacBook Air

Episode 1027

Karen from Charlottesville, VA

Karen is having trouble with her MacBook Air running OS X Mavericks. She didn't like it and decided to install Windows on it with Boot Camp. Now her sound doesn't work. Leo says this be happening because she got rid of OS X to put Windows on it, and Boot Camp drivers aren't supported on Vista. She'll have to install Windows 7, and that would require re-installing OS X again.
