Paul is going to college to study mechanical engineering and he needs a good laptop that can handle the work load. Leo says ideally, he'll get more bang for his buck with a PC. He'll also get more choices. Also, it's always best to check with the college or university for what they prefer. They may require more powerful hardware and specific software. He'll also want an SSD because it'll boot up faster.
laptops for college
Thomas is going to college this fall, studying computer science. He wants to get a new laptop to supplement his desktop at school. Should he buy a MacBook Pro? Leo says that he should and the reason is that Macs are built on the Linux kernel, making it ideal for computer programming. Before he buys anything, though, he should call the school and talk to the head of the Computer Science department and ask their recommendations. Worst case scenario, he can buy the Mac and then install Windows or Linux on it. The downside is that they are more expensive.
Wendy's daughter is going to college and she wants to get her a MacBook for school. She went to the Apple Store and they're trying to convince her to buy an iPad instead. Leo says that's Apple's new marketing strategy because they want to stop making computers in favor or mobile devices. But the fact is, we're not where they say we are, especially for college.
Jerry is a long time Mac user and he's going back to school for Aerospace engineering. Now he has to get a Windows machine. What's the best for him? Linux? Leo says he'll most likely need Windows. He should get recommendations from his teachers, but most of the stuff he'll need is on Windows. It's pretty solid and rather "Mac-ish." The biggest differences are relatively insignificant.
Christine uses a Chromebook, but her son is getting ready for college and she wants to know what to get him. He's still into Minecraft. Leo says that any laptop will be great for Minecraft. Her budget is $600.
Beth is sending her daughter to school and needs to get her an affordable laptop in the $600 range. Her daughter wants a Mac, though. Leo says that the cheapest Mac is the MacBook Air at $999. She can shave off a hundred or so by going with the Refurbished Macs, but she should only get them through Apple. That way she'll also get a warranty.
Carla is looking to get a laptop for school, which she can have her textbooks on for under $1500. Leo says that an ultrabook like the Asus ZenBook with a 512GB SSD will be good enough. That will also give her room for music, movies and photos. She can get a less expensive laptop with a spinning drive, but an SSD is faster.
