Jennifer doesn't have a smartphone, yet she's paying $80 a month! Leo suggests going to Verizon and getting a cheaper plan. Jennifer is due for a new phone though, so she's considering upgrading to a smartphone. She's never been an Apple user, having only used Windows on her computer. She's wondering if Android would be better for her, but there are so many options. There always seems to be something new. She's a professor at a community college and she doesn't want to look too "uncool." So she needs to get up to speed.
The news was leaked to AllThingsD and the Wall Street Journal that Apple will announce the new iPhone on September 10th. Leo thinks there actually will be two iPhones, the iPhone 5S and a cheaper, iPhone 5C, which will have a plastic shell and come in a variety of colors.
Tricia has an iPhone 4S and she wants to keep her unlimited data plan with Verizon. She wants to upgrade to the iPhone 5S, but can she still keep her data plan? Leo says that according to Verizon, she may need to pay full price on the phone in order to keep the unlimited data plan. However if she's really nice and asks them politely, then they may waive the requirement.
As we get towards fall, rumors are flying about when Apple will announce the next generation iPhone. The two rumored iPhones will be the iPhone 5S and the iPhone 5C. The iPhone 5C will be available in a variety of colors, according to reports, and will be lower in cost. Leo says we won't see a lot of hardware advancements as we are on the 'tock' of the 'tick-tock' cycle. We will see the obvious software refinements that we have already learned from the iOS7 announcement a few months back.
This week, the Cupertino rumor mill kicked into high gear and Leo says that some of them are down right nutty. The first rumor is that Apple will skip the 5S and go straight to the 6. The second is that Apple will announce a new budget iPhone, with a plastic body and a myriad of colors.
We're hearing that manufacturing problems in China are causing a delay with the upcoming iPhone 5S, which is now believed to be delayed until the fall. Leo says that Apple is falling further behind Android which is faster, has larger screens, and removable batteries. It's too bad, considering that Apple pioneered the modern smartphone.
Leo says don't wait. It's probably not going to be here until fall of 2013, because Apple doesn't typically release new iPhones sooner than a year. Even then, the iPhone 5S would probably only have marginal improvements over the iPhone 5.
