The iPad Pro is a bit larger with a 12.9" screen. It also has better sound. But it's a little heavier at 1 1/2 pounds. So it depends on which one he would like best.

Chris wants the fastest iPad he can get, Is the Pro better? Leo says that the new iPad Air is the fastest out there right now. Faster than the iPad Pro. But the Pro will likely come out with a new model in the Spring. So if you can wait until then, then do. If you can't, then the Air is a good move and the designs are very similar. The pro may be a better screen. But not by much.

Leo says that the iPad Pro will cost the same as a laptop and has the same processor as the new Apple Silicon models will have. But he'll want to be sure to get the magic keyboard. With that, it'll perform just like a laptop. Leo would be reluctant to buy a MacBook or an iMac until the new Apple Silicon models are announced. That could cause the Intel models to drop in price. Should he wait a year to shake out all the bugs in Apple Silicon? Leo says not necessarily.

This week, Apple announced the new iPhone SE in black, white, and "product red," which proceeds will go to CoVid19 relief. The SE model has no headphone jack and costs $399. Leo says it's based on the iPhone 8 chassis and has the guts of the iPhone 11. But Leo is still bothered by a lack of headphone jack, meaning the money you save on the phone is eaten away by expensive Bluetooth AirPods. 

It also comes with a single camera, which Leo says is a very good camera. 

New Apple Devices Announced, While Stores Closed

This week, Apple announced the new MacBook Air and iPad Pro. But while Apple has new devices for users to buy, all Apple Stores are closed, except in China. But Leo says that people really don't need to try the latest devices, they know what they're all about. The new MacBook Air is the first refresh of the laptop in a few years, and it's very thin and light. The new iPad Pro has a 50-80% speed increase with a faster processor. The camera has two lenses: wide and ultra-wide.

And since Gary's wife uses a Mac at school, the MacBook Air is perfect. And she could get an educational discount. The only negative on the MacAir is that it doesn't have any ports other than a single USB-C connector.

Apple announced a new iPad Pro and MacBook Air this week. And Leo says that the iPad Pro costs as much, or more, than a fully equipped MacBook Air. Also, there isn't much difference between the previous iPad Pro and the new model, so Leo isn't sure it's worth upgrading to, and if you're looking at it for a new purchase, the MacBook Air will have more workable apps, vs. the tablet based iOS apps. 

Can I connect my iPad to an external monitor?

Frank has an iPad mini that he wants to connect to a computer monitor. Can he do that? Leo says that the iPad Mini only has a lightning connector. But you can get an HDMI to lightning adapter from Apple that will enable connecting to it. Look for an MFI certified adapter. It'll also have a lightning connector too so you can charge it as well. You can also Airplay to a TV which supports it. The iPad Pro, however, does support Type C, which connects to a monitor. Can he add a mouse? Leo says you can; it's in the accessibility settings. But it's really made to use touch.

But the iPad is a great option. Because everyone has a mobile device now, Airlines no longer have entertainment systems onboard, choosing for streaming content via WiFi. You merely download the airline app, and you can watch movies, TVs, etc. That's where the iPad can shine.
