Barry wants to know if he has to update his iPhone's OS. He's worried the update could brick his phone. Leo says that's always possible with updates, but the benefit of having the latest OS outweighs the slight risk that it could hurt the phone. He should always update because there are security patches and critical updates that are a must. Sometimes there's a bad update, but it's really rare, especially in the iPhone. There's new features in iOS 10 that make the phone run smoother as well.
Clarence is moving to an iPhone because he just can't get good coverage in his area with an Android phone. Leo says that's not really what's going on here. All phones are pretty much the same when it comes to connectivity. If he's losing his connection, it may be that his carrier doesn't have good coverage in his area.
Michele is having issues with her iPad 2. The Wi-Fi is dropping out and her apps disappear and reappear. Is it wearing out? Leo says that what Michele is dealing with is a "Springboard crash." It may be corrupted. She should try to backup her iPad, which she should do regularly using iTunes. Once she's got it backed up, she should do a complete factory reset. It may even need to have a DFU reset.
Shane isn't a big iOS fan, but he finds that the iPhone handles music and streaming much better than Android. Leo agrees, but says that Android has claimed they have finally solved their music latency problems. Even if they have, it's hard to beat how Apple handles their music. From higher resolution audio, to streaming from the cloud, to iTunes, it really is the top.
If you are having odd problems with your iOS device, there are some basic steps you can take first that might resolve the issue. First is to simply reboot the iPhone by holding down the power button and then "slide to power off." Then hold the power button again until it starts up with the Apple logo.
Next you can try a hard reset. You can do this by holding down the on/off button and the home button until the Apple logo appears.
Lori has an iPad and was backing up regularly to iCloud, but when she connected it to iTunes, it said she hadn't backed up since January. Leo says that the iCloud backups won't show up in iTunes. That will only show her the last time she directly connected it to the computer.
The White House has released an augmented reality app. The app called "1600" allows anyone with a smartphone or tablet and a $1 bill to take a tour of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Leo believes it's far more useful than virtual reality.
Microsoft is the first to leverage augmented reality with HoloLens. It's currently $3,000, but that should get cheaper soon. Leo says he wouldn't be surprised to see if plummet in price by next year.
LeAnne wants to know if the iPhone 5 is still a good phone to get. Leo says she could still find them, but the iPhone SE is a better buy because it's essentially an iPhone 5 with a newer processor. It'll likely stay updated longer.
Lori is having a problem with her iPad 2. She syncs it over Wi-Fi, but lately when she tries to plug it in to her PC, it won't let her sync. It just requests to restore to a backup. Jason says that the PC is looking at the iPad as if it's a new one and can't identify it. Updating iTunes on the PC and iOS on the iPad could help. The iPad 2 doesn't support iOS 10, though. She may be at the end of the line there. If it offers to set it up as a new iPad, that may be OK, as it pulls the data off the iPad and syncs it. That can be scary, so Lori should have iCloud backup enabled.
