Should I wait to buy a new iMac?

Apple iMac

Episode 1375

Todd from Topeka, KS

Tom wants to know if he should wait to buy a new iMac. Leo says that it may be a good idea. We're expecting new iMacs any time now, and there is an Apple Event coming in about a month. It'll likely have new processors, an updated screen, and USB-C and Thunderbolt connections. But performance wise, it really won't be much faster, if at all. So if he bought now, he won't be missing out that much.

Why is my iMac rebooting?

Apple iMac

Episode 1338

Elizabeth from Long Beach, CA

Elizabeth is having an issue with her Apple iMac rebooting randomly. Leo says that overheating may be the culprit. Computers will shut down or reboot when it overheats. But if it happens when she's doing nothing, then overheating is unlikely. A buggy operating system may cause it if a process is running away. It could also be a power issue in her home. Power can be "dirty" and that could be causing it. Using an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) could prevent low power and power surges. The electrical cord being frayed and loose could cause this too. It may also be a failing power supply.

Why is my Mac acting crazy?

Apple iMac

Episode 1329

Dave from Hollywood Hills, CA

Dave feels like his computer is possessed. After awhile, it just goes crazy on him. It's an old Mac and runs OS X Lion. Leo says that the problem may be a messed up keyboard or mouse. A 10 year old mac is long past the time to get a new one and there's new refreshed Macs coming next month. He can also get a refurbished one from Apple and save a few hundred bucks.

WWDC Keynote Is Tomorrow, June 2

Episode 1088

Tomorrow is WWDC (WorldWide Developer's Conference) as Tim Cook and his development posse will deliver a keynote that Leo thinks will feature software announcements of OS X, code named "Syrah." Some believe it'll be called "Yosemite," though. We'll also see a preview of iOS 8 which will be out in the fall. But there are some who believe there will be hardware announcements of new iMacs or Mac Pros. Maybe even a MacBook Air with retina display. Don't hold your breath for a new iPhone or iPad, as Apple moved it to a fall release schedule a few years ago.

Should I switch to an iMac?

Episode 1018

Jackie from New York, NY

Jackie is considering making "the switch" to an iMac. Leo says he prefers the Mac, but there's really not that much difference now between Mac and Windows. It's largely a matter of taste. Buy business grade hardware and it'll last. Not all PCs are business grade - a lot of them are low quality consumer grade computers at low cost.
