Rick bought a new Windows 7 PC. But when he was using Windows XP one last time, he got nailed by the FBI Moneypack virus. Leo says that the FBI is not going to make him buy a gift card at 7-11 and pay them tribute. Since he isn't locked out, he can just backup his data, format the hard drive and reinstall Windows. It's just an annoying malware popup designed to make people worry.
FBI Moneypak Virus
Ann got bit by the FBI MoneyPak virus. This is a scam called ransomware. The virus locks down a computer and won't allow the user to use it until they send them money. It's definitely not the FBI. The only way to get rid of it is to format her drive and reinstall Windows from a known, good source. It will also help if she uses an updated OS like Windows 7.
Martin got a popup saying he's been infected and he needs to buy a Moneypack card and send it to the FBI. Leo says that's a ransom ware scam. Bad guys rely on users to run software through social engineering. AntiVirus will protect him from everything but himself. If he chooses to install something bad, even if he isn't aware it's bad, he's defeated the AVS protection, and that's what they rely on. The only way to get rid of it is to backup his data, format his hard drive, and reinstall Windows from a known, good source.
John got a pop-up for the FBI MoneyPak scam. Leo says that's exactly what it is. The FBI doesn't sell a get out of jail free card for the cost of a MoneyPak card. Hackers, however, are making billions on it. Not only are they making money, they've locked up his computer as well.

It's designed to use fear and make people act without thinking and just pay them. And it's costing people millions annually. If you get any virus, the only real way to get rid of it is to backup your data (if you can) and then format the hard drive and reinstall Windows from a known, good source. DO NOT EVER PAY A HACKER TO UNLOCK YOUR COMPUTER!
Josh is trying to boot up his mother's PC and it seems to be locked. Leo says it sounds like the BIOS lock is engaged, but it wants him to buy a MoneyPak card and send it to the Department of Justice.
