Rex is having issues with his printer and was told to delete the printer driver to fix it. Will that work? Leo says that if he deletes a bad driver, Windows will look for a new one and reinstall it. But it will be the latest driver that Microsoft certifies, and that could fix the problem. Rex could also be dealing with a bad spooler. Leo recommends using Hamrick VueScan as his scanner driver. It has better settings, and could work better for him.
David has high end 17" Windows 7 laptop, but he's having issues with his optical drive after being reinstalled. Leo says there's a bunch of things it could be, like a damaged player or a broken cable. Since it happened after a reinstall, it may have missed the DVD player driver. David should check his device manager to see if Windows sees it. If it's not in there, then he'll need to install the drivers in order to use that player.
Andrew's laptop goes to sleep and when he wakes it up, it shows a broken up video screen until he reboots. Leo says it wakes up confused, and he's not surprised since it's Windows. But he's never seen what Andrew describes. It usually causes problems like this with Hibernation, but not sleep. That's why he recommends disabling hibernate. But sleep shouldn't do that since the RAM gets refreshed regularly. If his BIOS is out of date, that could cause it. But it's never happened to Leo. Andrew should also make sure his display drivers are up to date.
Bob just got his first smartphone, the LG Aristo. When he plugs it into his PC to charge it, a window comes up that says his update is seven years out of date. Leo says it sounds like a Windows message about a driver and he can ignore it.
Scott bought a Dell OptiPlex and it doesn't have a sound mixer utility for SoundForge. Leo says that it should, especially since Scott sees a microphone. It may not show up from the right click menu on the task bar, though.
Scott should check his sound and task bar settings. He can also try to install the drivers from Dell. The sound card may also need to be enabled in BIOS. Also, he should check in the Device Manager (Windows Key + X) and see if the drivers are missing. The chatroom says he may need to install ASIO drivers for SoundForge.
Larry is having trouble with his NVidia video card which keeps crashing, especially when watching HD video. The screen will go black and he'll get awful sounding audio. Leo says that's a sign of a bad or corrupted driver that will write improperly to the memory buffers. The only thing that can do that is Windows itself or a driver. Reinstalling the driver could solve the problem.
Dave upgraded to a Windows 10 Acer PC and his graphics are too large. Then it crashes, causing him to have to reboot. Leo says that's a common video driver issue. Leo says Dave needs to make sure he has the latest drivers from Acer. What Dave needs to do is figure out which video card he has, whether it's a dedicated video card or an integrated video card. He should look in the Device Manager to see the list of hardware. Then once he has that information, he should go to the Acer website and download the drivers. It could be via video card or machine model number.
Tom has two laptops that he's upgraded to Windows 10. One has decreased his battery life by 33%. Leo says that's usually a sign of a driver issue. Windows could have installed the wrong drivers. He recommends going to the manufacturer and getting the latest drivers. Power management has been a tough problem with Windows 10, though. So they may have a fix for that.
Tim updated to Windows 10 and now he can't get online wirelessly. Leo says Tim's Asus uses the Broadcom driver. It's the ASUS T100 driver package and he can get it at asus.com. Then all he'll need to do is install it via thumb drive. He can even do it on a Mac. Then he can install the drivers to his Asus from the thumb drive. He should just make sure the thumb drive is formatted to FAT32.
Dennis bought a new Dell XPS 9500 computer. Leo says that Dell XPS laptops are a very good choice. Dennis has an issue with the sound on it, though. He's also having problems streaming video. Leo says it could be the sound card but his first instinct is to look at the operating system. Dennis should update the drivers. He may even have to try reinstalling Windows. Then if that doesn't work, he can think about hardware.
