Scott joins us to talk about how to get the darkest possible room to enjoy your home theater. Scott has blackout curtains, 10% gray painted walls, and even black carpeting. All that serves to create a black hole for light that will give his home theater the brightest possible look while watching. Scott also uses a special woven projector screen which has a pass through feature for audio just like in a movie theater.
Scott saw Independence Day Resurgence last night. It was a little disappointing and felt like there were too many writers in the room. It was fun to see the band back together 20 years later, though, and there was lots of nostalgia. The younger actors don't bring it as well, though. It did look fantastic in Dolby Cinema, at least. This gives you the movie in high dynamic range through Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. It really is the way to see it. It'll cost more, but it's really worth it. Scott has a list here.
Scott joins us to talk about the new Dolby Atmos Soundbar. The idea of superior sound is to get a greater sense of immersion and Atmos adds to the effect of surround sound. It puts the sound above you so that it comes at you from every direction. Atmos does this by bouncing the audio off the ceiling. Then, using DSP, it can create a simulated surround sound effect. Leo wonders if it would be better to have two really good stereo speakers, rather than 7 surround sound speakers that may not be as good. Scott says that is a good argument. But the center channel is where the voice should be.
Leo hears that there's a new Atmos Sound Bar. Is it worth it? Scott says that the new UltraHD Premium Spec supports Atmos in the home and it should sound great. And more UHD Blu-ray titles are coming out. Sony is one of four studios that have released UHD Blu-rays as well as Fox, Universal and Lionsgate. So we're coming up to the transition of a new format in home entertainment. Scott even believes that the move to UHD will be faster than when we transitioned from DVD to Blu-ray. And it won't be that much more on the onset.
Scott has a few questions this week. Matias from Sweden has a pair of Mirage OM6 Speakers, BMW Surrounds, and he was thinking about getting a Mirage center channel speaker. Scott says that's a good idea. He'll want to match his speakers as much as possible and it's a good idea to make sure he keeps the speakers out in the open because they are omni directional. That allows for bouncing sound off the walls and that gives it a nature tonal quality.
Scott saw Big Hero 6 in Atmos, and it was completely immersive. The sound was coming from everywhere. The Hobbit is also coming. And the new Star Wars trailer is out, although it doesn't tell you very much.
Scott Wilkinson saw Interstellar and says that Christopher Nolan used a wide variety of aspect ratios to maximize the impact of moments in the film. From wide screen for intimate moments to tall for outer space moments. It's available in six different formats from IMAX film to 4K digital. Scott says that Nolan is definitely a filmophile. He doesn't like immersive audio, so he didn't mix in Dolby Atmos. And he doesn't like 3D. It's a pure movie experience.
Scott had the inventor of Auro3D Immersive Audio, Otto Von Balen, on Home Theater Geeks this week and immersive audio is becoming a huge trend thanks to Dolby Atmos' success last year. Auro puts additional speakers higher on the wall so that the audio doesn't get lost bouncing off the wall. Scott says that what's needed is a standard that all immersive systems can operate under, and SMPTE is working hard to adopt one.
This week, Scott will be attending the CDIA show. That stands for Custom Designers and Installers Assoc. It's where Scott usually sees what's on the horizon for home theater projection. And what's he's really excited about is that he'll get to see a ton manufacturers put out systems with Dolby Atmos for the home. Scott says he's found it to be very effective in the theaters and he's looking forward to it being in the home. There's also another system competing with Atmos called ORO.
Scott was in New York when the Aereo decision came down and he says that the decision was the proper one, feeling that strictly speaking, the service was a retransmission. It's sad that customers are without a viable alternative, but it was the right decision because copyright was being violated.
