Doctor Mom is self quarantining right now to remain safe. As a grandma and a doctor, she wants to stay healthy. But she's also currently on an emergency preparedness list due to being a retired medical professional. She wants to create a message chain. Leo says there's a thing called NIXLE that enables you to send group messages for emergencies. But she wants to do it in a manner that prevents group replies flooding people as well. Google Forms could be an excellent way to do it, but the responses have to be checked constantly.
Doctor Mom joins Leo to talk about how the Mobile World Congress has since been cancelled due to the Covid19 (aka Corona) virus outbreak. Since most mobile phones come out of China, there was widespread fear that there would be a breeding ground to spreading the virus. Doctor Mom says that the Corona virus has been around for years, in one form or another. What's new is how the Chinese government has been relatively stingy with information, and the virus has become deadly with some people. Is it prudent to cancel a trade show?
Doctor Mom finally got her Amazon Echo Auto device and plugged it in. She says it gives them voice control to your phone through the car via Bluetooth. You're talking to your phone and use all the commands of any other Echo device. It'll also give you directions through any maps app you determine. But she says it'll chew up your data plan pretty quickly.
This week, Amazon has announced users have the option to delete any recordings Alexa has made. It's in Settings-Alexa Account-Alexa Privacy-Review Voice History.
Amazon has also announced the new Echo Show 5. But Doctor Mom says it's way too small to watch video on it. Leo says it's a direct competitor to the Google Home Hub.
Doctor Mom calls in to talk about Amazon's new Alexa feature that listens for the sound broken glass. When it hears glass breaking, it sends you an alert on your phone and can notify your alarm company. Doctor Mom says this new feature joins a feature that monitors your smoke and CO2 alarms as well. So it's listening for a lot more than just the word Alexa or Echo.
Doctor Mom calls in to talk about new features with Amazon Alexa/Echo. You can now not only link your Echo to your cellphone to make calls, but you can also make Skype calls. And while they have Bluetooth built in, you can't add a headset. It's all speakerphone. Apple is going to be showing up on Amazon for the holidays, which Doctor Mom says will kill the HomePod. A great, but overpriced speaker system.
