Disney+ Reports Record Revenue for Streaming Service

Disney has reported that the action film Black Widow has earned more than $125 Million on Disney+ Premium Service. The premium tier charges $29 for streaming each title, but the Scarlet Johannsen doesn't get a dime of that because her contract only applies to box office revenue, although Black Widow has made over $350 million at the Box Office. Nothing to shake a stick at. But the actor is suing, claiming releasing the film simultaneously on streaming violates her contract and cost her millions.

During a four hour stream for its annual Investor Day, the Walt Disney Company executives previewed their slate of new content for Star Wars, Marvel, Disney, and National Geographic. Leo says the huge takeaway here is that Disney's upcoming slate is 80% streaming content. That's huge. 

A few days later, it was reported that Disney+ streaming service will be raising its rates in 2021.

Scott joins Leo to talk about content creator intent vs. consumer choice. Netflix is doing a trial run on playing back movies at up twice the normal speed. Leo says that Lisa listens to books at that speed. She gets more read that way.

But Scott says that directors are really up in arms over it, saying it alters the creative intent of the movie. It works in audio, because of pitch shifting. But for Video, well Leo says it makes the actors look like the Keystone cops.

Disney+ launches November 12th, for $6.99 a month. This will include more than 25 original series and 10 original films, plus the entire Disney catalogue of 7500 TV episodes and 2500 films, content from National Geographic, Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm, Fox, ESPN, and more. Rich adds that Disney will also probably offer a bundled deal with HULU, which offers LiveTV as well.

Rich says that by comparison, that will put tremendous pressure on Apple and Netflix who are charging more.
