What laptop should I buy for college?

Lenovo T480

Episode 1489

Jeremy from Hisperia, CA

Jeremy is going to college and wants to buy a new MacBook laptop. Leo says he should wait until after June 4th, because Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference is happening and they're rumored to be announcing new MacBooks. Leo adds that he would have a broader range of choices going with Windows, and it may be a good idea to contact his college and see what they support, especially if he's in a field of study that is focused. If price is an object, he should get a better computer with a smaller hard drive, but it should be at least 256GB SSD.

Justin from Oxnard, CA

Justin is back and he's trying to decide which Windows computer to get. He's looking at the Dell XPS 13 and the Sony Vaio 13. Leo has several of the XPS 13s, they're very reliable, and have gorgeous bezel-less displays. The only downside is that the camera is placed on the bottom of the screen, not the top because of that design. If Justin does a lot of video conferencing, he'll have to keep that in mind.

Dell XPS 13

Episode 1319

Sandy from Costa Mesa, CA

Sandy just had Windows 10 installed on her computer automatically and she wonders if it's really powerful enough. It's slow and it crashes a lot. Microsoft says her laptop had old drivers and needed them updated. But after that, it's still having issues. Leo says that the problem is that Windows 10 upgraded on top of Windows. A clean install of Windows 10 might make it better. She should wipe the drive and install Windows fresh. She should first backup her data to an external drive, and Microsoft's backup utility will work for that.

Dell XPS 13

Episode 1256

Camden from Indiana

Camden is having issues with his Dell XPS' Wi-Fi connection. He's running Windows 7. Leo says to make sure Camden has the right driver from Dell. This would be the motherboard drivers, because most modern laptops don't have a separate card for it anymore. Leo has seen this happen with his Windows 10 Dell XPS 13, and he'd have to reboot for the Wi-Fi to come back. But when Leo uses Linux Mint with the Broadcom driver, he never has any issues.

Leo says that in college computer science, most use Macs because the heart of OS X is BSD Unix. So getting a Mac is definitely the way to go for computer science. But there's no reason to not get a Windows machine. Leo likes the new Dell XPS 13. It's thin, light, and has excellent battery life.

And by the time it does come out, Microsoft will have its HoloLens which Leo thinks would be even better.

Episode 1158

Todd from Topeka, KS

Leo suggests contacting the school for requirements and what they prefer. The college store may have a good student discount, too. Since it's possible to run Windows on a Mac, he can't really go wrong with a Mac. It can run Windows natively from bootup. She could also run it in emulation (virtually), which slows it down a little bit, but not much. If she already has a Mac, she'll be fine. But Leo still recommends contacting the school.
