boot loops

Why can't I boot up my computer?

Windows 7 (Upgrade to Windows 10 soon!)

Episode 1641

Gloria from North Hollywood, CA

Gloria's Windows 7 computer "went out" recently. It seems to be stuck in a boot loop. Rich says a software update may have broken your computer. Rich suggests going into safe mode and see if it will boot up. Use the F8 key when it's booting up. If it does, then that indicates a corrupted driver. Maybe a video driver. You can also bring your computer into a nearby Microsoft Store and they will run diagnostics to see what's going on. But with Windows 7 reaching End of Life in January, it's time to think about getting Windows 10. Rich also recommends looking at a Google Chromebook.

How can I get my Windows computer to update?

Blue screen of death

Episode 1458

Rene from Corona, CA

Rene is having trouble updating Windows. It stalls out at 80%. He then reboots and it goes back to before he tried updating. Then he gets a blue screen and he can't restore or update. Leo says that not an unusual problem. If you think about it, with millions of computers, there's going to be a certain percentage that will experience issues like this, and updating while a computer is running is nontrivial. It could be something is blocking it, like a third-party antivirus app. It could also just be a bad download. Or this could be the Intel Spectre/Meltdown fix that is causing problems.

How can I get my phone to stop rebooting?

HTC One

Episode 1101

Christine from New Jersey

Christine has an HTC One and now it's just rebooting. Leo says it can happen with any phone. It generally means something with the phone's data storage. It's called a "boot loop." She can go into recovery mode and start over, but that may not work. She could also try and root it with different firmware or a third party recovery tool. Clockwork Mod works well. Leo says she should first try going to her local store and get the expert to try and clear it.
