Dick DeBartolo, The Giz Wiz

Dick DeBartolo

Episode 1343

This week's gadget is the Vizio M Series 50" Ultra HDR TV with Dolby Vision. Somes with SmartCast, which is Google Chromecast built in. Also comes with a 6" Android tablet as it's ultimate remote and Chromecast interface. Four HDMI ports to connect Cable/Satellite boxes, Bluray/DVD players, Gaming Consoles and Computers. You can even use the virtual keyboard on the tablet to name the inputs. Be aware though this is what VIZIO calls a Tuner-Free Display. Since most households today stream or watch live TV from cable and satellite boxes which don't require a tuner, you probably won't care.

Scott Wilkinson on Home Theater

Episode 1341

Scott says we've been seeing Black Friday ads all month and Cyber Monday is now all month long. This is a good way to score a store brand TV for a bedroom or guest room. Scott advises sticking with deals you can get on name brands, just look down a few model tiers. Scott is also not seeing that many deals on 4K TVs this time around. 4K doesn't matter in terms of the detail you can on a TV at smaller screen sizes, but 4K also will minimize artifacts. Moving forward, 4K is the way to go, and more content is out now to make it worth it.

What TV should I buy on Black Friday?

Samsung UHD TV

Episode 1340

Rusty from San Diego, CA

Rusty is seeing ads for TVs on Black Friday and it's time to get him a new TV. Leo says that Black Friday deals are often house brands, cheaper models and sometimes last year's model that they're clearing out. If he is OK with that, then it comes down to how large a TV he needs. It comes down to how far away he will be sitting and how immersive he'll want it to be. If he wants to get 4K, then he'll have to look past the door busters. Moving forward, he'll want to get a TV that is UHD Premium. Samsung's SUHD TV predated UHD Premium, but it's pretty close to the standard.

Why can't I play streaming audio from my phone on the Samsung Radiant360 Bluetooth speaker?

Samsung Radiant360 R7 Wi-Fi/Bluetooth Speaker

Episode 1242

Trisha from La Costa, CA

Trisha recently bought a Samsung Radiant 360 Speaker, but it apparently has to be controlled by a Samsung app on her smartphone. The problem is that she can't play the streaming audio from a separate app she likes. Leo says that is weird. Most speakers pair directly to the phone via Bluetooth, and anything that she could play on her phone could go through the speaker. The app seems to be designed to control multiple speakers in different rooms.

Can I still get a Black Friday deal on a TV?

Episode 1242

Abby from Burbank, CA

Abby's TV is starting to die and they want to buy a new 50" LCD TV. Sadly, they missed Black Friday. Leo says the good news is that Samsung's Black Friday deal runs until the end of the month, so she's not out of luck yet. And they're selling them for half price. Should they buy a 4K TV? Leo says he isn't really sure it's time for it yet, as there's still no content for it. She could stream Netflix with it at 4K, but it's going to kill her bandwidth. Also, she'd have to get a 4K Blu-ray player, but there won't be many available until next year.

Can I return a broken TV bought on a Black Friday deal?

Episode 1241

Mark from Topeka Canyon, CA

Mark bought one of those 55" 1080p Westinghouse LCD TVs for $250 and he's got huge stripes down the center. Leo says it's broken, that's for sure, and Mark should return it. But Mark says that Target is sold out so he can't exchange it. It could also be a TV that was made specifically for Black Friday or a discontinued item and as such, they may not get any more. Leo says he should get his money back. If he's going to pay for an item, even on Black Friday, it should work correctly.
