Why can't I print after updating Catalina?

macOS Catalina

Episode 1698

Ron from San Marcos, CA

Ron has a new iMac which he updated to macOS Catalina. But now he can't get it to print to his HP OfficeJet. He downloaded the latest drivers, but that hasn't helped. Leo says that those drivers may not be for macOS Catalina. Go into the System Preference page and see if it sees the printer. If it does, then select add and let macOS download the drivers itself. You may also need to remove the printer and then add it again.

Why Can't I AirPrint With My iPhone?

Episode 1697

Chuck from Lawrence, KS

Chuck can't get his air printer to work wirelessly. He can't print from the iPhone or iPad. But he can print from his Mac. Leo says that Chuck's Macs are printing straight over WiFi, not via AirPrint. That's why they can work. Go to the printer options page and make sure it isn't printing to the old printer. Also look to see if the mobile devices can "see" the printer. If it doesn't, then it can't print. So it's likely an issue with the Epson's Wifi settings. Check-in there and look to see if it's AirPrint enabled.

How can I print from my iPad?

Printer

Episode 1141

Eric from Cathedral City, CA

Eric has an iPad and wants to be able to print wirelessly with his printer. But AirPrint doesn't work on it. Leo says that probably means his printer doesn't support AirPrint technology. There's more than one way to add support for this, though. Before AirPrint, there were apps that could do it. They were kind of kludgy, sending the file to the app and then to the printer.

Acer Chromebook

Episode 1125

Tara from Venice, CA

Tara has a lot of computer stuff that she really doesn't need. Can she use an iPad and still do online banking securely? Leo says Tara can, but it's more dependent on the security of the bank than the iPad. If the bank's security is up to date, then absolutely she can do it. Leo also says she can keep her Wi-Fi and use a Wi-Fi enabled Chromebook instead. It's essentially a browser based computer with nothing else. Just about everything she does is online these days, and that makes the Chromebook an excellent and secure alternative.

The printer will need to be on the network or shared in some way, though.
