Why won't my remote work with the IR extender I bought for my sound bar?

Episode 928 (1:52:10)

Mike from Maine
Yamaha YAS101

Mike bought the Yamaha YAS 101 sound bar and he really enjoys it.

Mike says the IR extender he bought doesn't work in darkness, though. Scott says that is strange. It should work even better in darkness than in ambient light. Scott says there may be a solution from AskMeHelpDesk.com, such as aiming the remote through a paper towel tube. That'll focus the IR beam directly where he needs it to go and be stronger when it gets there.

The reason for this could be that the TV he is using is emitting some infrared radiation, which could be interfering with the remote signals.
