Scott Wilkinson, Home Theater HiFi

Episode 919 (28:04)

Eugene has a 4x4 Matrix Switcher and 3 flat panels with a Denon Receiver and Roku player. His problem is that one of his Samsung flat panels is displaying no signal unless he removes the switcher. Handshake issues? Scott agrees. There's probably an issue with the HDMI and there isn't much to do about it. HDMI is no longer a black art, but problems like this do occur and there's no real good solution.

Jake asks why do digital TV manufacturers and program providers ignore picture sizing? Scott says that bugs the heck out of him as well. Some stretch 4x3 to 16x9 and you can see flaws that have been magnified. You can go into the TV settings and use the aspect ratio control to force the TV into a 4x3 aspect ratio, but then you get gray or black bars on the sides.

Program note, Scott will be filling in for the Tech Guy on November 17/18, when Leo travels to Australia. So get your questions ready for all home theater all the time! He'll also have a few guests including Gary Rizzo, who won an Oscar for his work on Inception, and Peter Ramsey, director of Rise of the Guardians.
