Colonial Pipeline Ransomeware Attack Causes Gas Shortages on East Coast

Episode 1796 (01:50)

Colonial Pipeline

A ransomware attack on Colonial Pipeline caused a complete shutdown of the system and resulted in widespread gas shortages all across the Eastern Seaboard. The hackers, known as Darkside, demanded 75 bitcoin, or about $5 million. Leo says that Darkside is "ransomware as a service." The pipeline is now back up and running and it looks like Colonial paid the ransom.  But in an ironic twist, Darkside's crypto account was emptied and they lost control of it. Could the US Government have taken these guys down? Leo says maybe. Or it's a convenient way to disappear and lay low.

Meanwhile, Leo encourages people to stop putting gasoline in plastic shopping bags. That's just a bomb waiting to go off.
