Watch Daniel from Chatsworth, CA Comments

Daniel's Thinkpad runs Windows XP and is experiencing the blue screen of death, or BSoD for short. Daniel can use the original install discs and go into recovery mode. That can fix anything that is going wrong. That will run the Windows System File Checker and replace any system files that are damaged. But it may also be a hard drive that is starting to fail. It would be a good idea to replace the hard drive. Luckily, it's easy to do with that Thinkpad.

Leo also says, however, that XP isn't being supported by Microsoft anymore, so it's high time to install a new OS on his computer. He recommends going with Linux. Xubuntu is a lightweight version designed for older, smaller machines. And check out Thinkpad Reddit for tips on how to keep that machine going.

Watch Hasan from Vancouver, BC, Canada Comments

Hasan has been having issues using Citrix on his Windows machine. Leo says that Citrix works on Linux, so Linux is an option if you're sick of Windows problems. But if you want to use Windows, make sure you're running the latest version of Windows 10. But it will also clobber Linux if you want to keep that as well. So install Windows first, then install Linux for a dual boot system. Leo recommends Manjaro, but you'll have to disable secure boot on Windows.

Watch Scott from Orange, CA Comments

Scott recently picked up the iPhone 12 Pro Max for shooting video. He says it feels solid, but it also feels heavy. He says the camera is so good, he uses it to shoot TV shows on a local cable network. But now he needs a TV with Dolby Vision to edit the video on it.

Leo says that the Pro XDR display could support it, but you don't want to spend $6,000 on that. Leo suggests going with a 4K HDR TV that supports Dolby Vision at 60 fps. Leo recommends an OLED TV, but LCD works better in brighter ambient conditions. You want to make sure the LCD TV is 4K HDR and has full-array local dimming (FALD). Don't get caught up in hype terms like "nanotechnology." Best Buy has a HiSense 70" 4K HDR TV on sale right now for $400. That's a good, aggressive price if you can find one.

Watch Micah from Maine Comments

Micah wants to talk about Google's decision to eliminate free unlimited storage in June of 2021. Moving forward, your storage will come out of your Google Drive allotment, which is 15GB free. After that, you will have to pay for additional storage. The good news though, is until June 2021, you can continue to upload unlimited, and it won't count against your allotment. But starting June 2021, any additional photos will be subject to the new rules. So users will have to consider whether to keep their photos there and pay for additional storage or move on to another option. Leo says that Amazon Prime is a good option, and if you're a Prime member, it's free. There's also Shutterfly.

Micah also wants to know he can free up space on an old iPad. He thought most of that data was kept online. Leo says they are, but there's a lot of "bloating" of app data like cache data. It'll cache media, images, music, etc. to speed up the load time.

Watch Gary from Hatfield, PA Comments

Gary wants to know if there's a way to change the closed captioning from being displayed where it does. Leo says that sometimes, TVs use different positioning for CC1, CC2, etc. Some systems allow you to modify the style of the captions for background, size, outlined, etc. Depends on the provider you use. Check out this article from the NY Times.

Watch Jacob from Montreal, Canada Comments

Jacob uses a classic shell with Windows 10 to make it look more like Windows 7. Leo says that the free Classic Shell is old and hasn't been updated for a while. So it's a security risk. Leo recommends StarDock. For further customization, they also make Windows Blinds and several others. You can get the entire library of utilities to customize your Windows OS for under $30.

What version of Linux should he try? Leo says that MX Linux/Debian is a good version for beginners. For more experienced users, try Manjaro. You can run some Windows apps on Linux as well, using Wine. But a better choice is to find a native open source app that's similar. Libre Office, for example, is the open-source alternative to MS Office.

Watch Joe from Coldwater, FL Comments

Joe is having trouble using Authy to log into his social media accounts. Authy is an authenticator that will give you a secure way to log into websites.

Joe also had to get a new phone after dropping his old iPhone into a pool. He took out the SIM, but now, the Authy issue has cropped up. Leo says the only way to fix it is to log into Authy, download the codes to your phone, and then try again. If that doesn't work, select "I don't have my authenticator," and they will email it to you. Then try to use it again.

You can also try turning on 2 Factor Authentication.

Watch Alexander from Bayside Queens, NY Comments

Alex's iCloud account nearly got hacked, but fortunately, his 2 Factor Authentication feature stopped it cold. Leo says that more companies are going to require authentication as a security measure. Everyone should use it.
