Scott has a few questions today. One is from a home theater fan who bought his components separately. The problem is that his Lexicon PrePro preamp doesn't have HDMI. So he's thinking of upgrading to a Marantz AV7005. Scott says it's a very good choice.
Can he connect to his old Lexicon and daisy chain it? Scott says no, he won't need it. Scott recommends selling it and buying the Marantz with it. Leo wonders if anyone will really hear the difference with a $2,000 preamp? Scott says it does have stellar sound quality when it comes to distortion. The other difference is features like room correction. But Scott says that since it doesn't have HDMI, it's a serious functional fail. So it's best to just replace it.
Leo also wonders if speakers are more important than the receiver. Scott says that the tonal quality is no better than the worst piece of equipment, so if your speakers aren't very good, you miss out on all the good sound quality you invested in. So you have to strike a balance across all your components.
