Mark is upgrading his Windows 7 laptop to Windows 10. Can he just upgrade or should he do a clean install? Leo says that he still prefers a clean install, but the truth is that the recent Windows 10 update makes clean installs unnecessary. He should still back up, though, just in case. But then he can go ahead and upgrade it. If there's problems, then he can resort to the clean install.
Daryl is running Windows 8.1, but after a so-called critical update, he gets a black screen. Leo says that sometimes an update can break something, and it sounds like it may be an incompatible video driver. First thing to do is to boot into Safe Mode. Then, if his screen comes up, that indicates a driver issue. Daryl should go to the video card manufacturer's website and download the latest video driver.
Roger's Windows 7 desktop PC isn't updating anymore. Have they stopped supporting it? Leo says no, Windows 7 is still supported. Roger may just have a stuck update that's preventing the others from being installed. Here's a tech note from Microsoft on how to clear it.
Tracy wants to know how her husband can do voice dictation on his Mac. Leo says to go to the System Preferences pane for keyboard settings and enable voice dictation on the Dictation tab. Then he can tap the function key twice on his iMac, and that will trigger voice dictation. It's pretty accurate. It won't be perfect, but it'll be 80% there. He can even do voice editing.
Foster upgraded to macOS High Sierra and now his Final Cut Pro 7 video editing program won't work. Why is Apple allowed to break people's apps and force them to pay for new versions? Leo says that sometimes when upgrading to a new OS, it has to leave apps behind, especially 32 bit apps. Apple would have done better to warn customers that it could happen. Leo says that most apps can be updated to work again, though, so he should go to his software websites and get the latest version. If it doesn't work after that, then it's been left behind.
Dale has been having trouble with Windows 10, and now he has the media creator tool to reinstall it. But he needs to change the BIOS so that it will boot to the thumb drive. How does he do it? Leo says it's different with every motherboard. It could be ESC, Delete, F1, F11, or F7. It varies. The chatroom says F12.
Charles would like to create a dual boot system on his laptop with Windows and Ubuntu Linux. How can he do that? Leo says that running Linux on his computer is a great journey and it has become a lot easier to create a dual boot system with Ubuntu. All he needs to do is download the installer to a USB key and then boot to it. Then it will walk him through creating the dual boot portion. Then when he boots up every day, the GRUB boot manager will ask him which OS he wants to load.
Max wants to know if there's a way to reset an account on macOS without destroying the data. Leo says he can delete an account without erasing the data and then recreate it. That should clean everything out. He'll have to be an administrator, and he'll have to make sure he doesn't check the box to delete the data.
He can also reset the password to recover the account.
Dale updated to Windows 10, but when the January update came out, he ran into a lot of issues. Should he go back to Windows 7? Leo says no. That's not the answer. Lately, there have been issues with updates coming from Microsoft, and it's not unusual for some computers to have issues with large updates. A simple fix is to start fresh with Windows 10. Dale should back up his data, then format the hard drive and reinstall Windows. He should first go to Microsoft and download the Media Creation Tool. Then he can put that on a USB key and plug it in.
Micah has been frustrated with Skype making unwanted changes and he eventually just gave up and chose to use Google Hangouts instead. Leo says that the sad thing about Microsoft buying Skype is that they continue to dumb it down to make it "easier" to use. But it gets frustrating because it doesn't always help when it comes to sound quality for recording.
