Why are my downloads so slow?

Episode 1354

Scott from Orange County, CA
Speed gauge

Scott is having issues with his downloads being inconsistent and slow. Leo says that ISPs usually use the phrase "up to" in their claims, and that's usually with the ideal conditions. Leo says that uploading can also slow down his internet access. How does uploading slow him down? Leo says that servers require acknowledgement that his traffic is coming through, so if he's downloading while his data is being backed up, it has to wait for its turn to upload that acknowledgement. This is why Carbonite uses very little upload bandwidth and why it takes so long to back up with it.

Why does it take so long to upload my videos to YouTube?

John from Yorba Linda, CA

John records his daughter's volleyball games and he's having issues uploading the 4K video. Leo says that's not surprising. If he has Google Fiber in his area, it's symmetric which is much faster.

Why is my internet access slow when uploading photos to Google Drive?

Rick from Torrance, CA

Episode 1192

Rick has Google Drive, and he's noticed his internet slows down when it's syncing data. Leo doesn't think this is a likely cause for slowing down his internet, because these programs are supposed to be "nice" -- they only will use a small fraction of the available bandwidth. Rick can pause the activity on Google Drive to see if that makes a difference. It could take up more bandwidth during the initial sync.

Then upload those photos from there.

Why does my internet connection stop when I'm uploading video?

Episode 1124

Vance from Florida
YouTube

Vance says that when uploading data, it completely hogs his bandwidth. Leo says that's usually true. If he saturates the upstream bandwidth with videos, the connection can't do any other internet activity as a result. Can he split the bandwidth to prevent that interruption? Leo says that's why bittorrent works better. There really isn't a way to do it unless his router supports it. Leo says it may be more practical to set the videos to upload as he gets ready to go to bed and let it run through the night.

YouTube also has an app to do this. Hammid could use the YouTube Capture app, which will shoot the video and upload it automatically.
