Why does my mac hang up after updating to Mojave?

Episode 1535

Brett from Woodbridge, NJ

Brett just updated to OSX Mojave and hangs up on the login screen. Leo says clearing the PRAM or parameter ram can sometimes solve issues like this. Also, reboot with CMD R and that will enable you to reinstall the OS. Maybe it wasn't updated properly. If that doesn't work, Leo recommends making an appointment at the Genius Bar in the Apple Store.

Chatroom says to boot into safe mode, press and hold the shift key, and it will install the absolute minimum. If it works OK after that, then there's an app that isn't compatible that's hanging things up.

Apple MacBook Air

Episode 1531

Matt from Florida

Matt is thinking of getting a MacBook Air with an i7 or a Mac Mini. But he's been holding off because he keeps hearing rumors of new models. Leo says that the problem with those two devices is that they haven't been updated since 2015, so buying one will get him an antiquated processor. The screen is also low resolution by comparison to today's standards. Leo also says that the rumor of a Mac Mini is extremely unlikely. There's no real data to support it. In fact, since Apple is more focused on mobile devices, it's more likely that Apple will discontinue it entirely sooner or later.

And at 32GB, and 2GB of RAM, he'll be better off buying a newer one and spending a little more on their higher end line. Then he could give that Cloudbook to his son and let him play Minecraft with it.

Apple MacBook Pro

Episode 1509

Manny from Mt. Carmel, PA

Manny has a 2013 MacBook Pro but he needs to upgrade and he's annoyed that Apple has removed the function keys in favor of the Touch Bar. Leo says that there is a 2017 MacBook Pro model that comes with the last batch of function keys. But this year, they aren't making them anymore. So it looks like the time for function keys is now over. Leo says that the speed of the i9 has made it worth it, though. The keyboard has also been improved thanks to a silicone dampener. The Touch Bar isn't really a bad idea, but hardly any apps support it.

It'll still be noticeable. And he'll get at least a 10-20% boost by doubling his RAM.
