Since the EFI Setup/BIOS doesn't see it, then that points to a hardware issue. It could be a bad board. He should try clearing the ESCD data in the memory. That could help. He can look in setup for it. There may also be a jumper on the motherboard to do it. If he still can't see it, then it's likely a bad CD player circuit board. The good news is, CD players are cheap.
David has high end 17" Windows 7 laptop, but he's having issues with his optical drive after being reinstalled. Leo says there's a bunch of things it could be, like a damaged player or a broken cable. Since it happened after a reinstall, it may have missed the DVD player driver. David should check his device manager to see if Windows sees it. If it's not in there, then he'll need to install the drivers in order to use that player.
Kathy wants a new computer with a built-in CD drive. Leo says that they're getting fewer and farther between, and both Microsoft and Apple have stopped making them. Dell's Inspiron has one, and Acer and Asus both have it. Is Costco a good place to buy them? Leo says that the advantage of Costco is both their return policy and their extended warranty. But they may be discontinued models as well. So she'll want to be sure that isn't the case.
Mary would like to get a laptop that has the capability to burn a CD. Do they make them anymore? Leo says that she's probably not going to get an ultrabook for it. She will probably have to get an external drive that plugs in via USB. She could buy a larger laptop, a desktop replacement to do it, but they're heavy. She's not going to use that drive very often, so why not just buy a lighter, thinner laptop and buy an external optical drive for when she needs it? Leo also advises considering a Chromebook.
