Do I need a disc utility program for my Mac?

DiskWarrior

Episode 1502

Alan from Spring, TX

Alan wants to know if MacKeeper is a good Mac maintenance tool. Leo's not a fan. Not only because it's not a very good utility, but simply because Alan doesn't need that kind of utility on the Mac. The OS is so mature now that those utilities that cleaned the hard disc and kept the registry in order simply aren't needed anymore. There already is a disc utility on the Mac and that's really all he needs. Alan could try Alsoft Disc Warrior, but at $100, Leo doesn't think it's worth it.

What is MacKeeper and should I keep it?

Episode 1205

Walt from Playa Vista, CA

Walt installed MacKeeper on his Mac. Leo says that he doesn't trust MacKeeper and notes this article on why he should avoid it. Unfortunately, if he tries to uninstall it, he won't be able get rid of all of it. There will still be stuff lingering. This doesn't mean it's malicious, just that it's really badly written.

Walt should search for ZeoBit or MacKeeper and he can delete the rest of them. The "Footy" popup is likely a browser extension. He should drag it out to his desktop and it'll probably disappear.

Why does Keychain Access keep popping up on my Mac?

Keychain Access

Episode 1139

Tom from Witt, IL

Tom's mother had relatives come over for Thanksgiving, and ever since they were there, her iMac has been having problems. She kept seeing "keychain" popping up, and she deleted everything in it in an attempt to fix the problem. Leo says if Keychain is popping up, it means that the Keychain password somehow got wiped out. So all Tom should have to do is log in using the computer password. Tom says when he gets into the keychain, there's nothing in it.
