Dennis bought a new Dell XPS 9500 computer. Leo says that Dell XPS laptops are a very good choice. Dennis has an issue with the sound on it, though. He's also having problems streaming video. Leo says it could be the sound card but his first instinct is to look at the operating system. Dennis should update the drivers. He may even have to try reinstalling Windows. Then if that doesn't work, he can think about hardware.
Ed backed up his hard drive and then ran the Microsoft Windows 10 Anniversary Update, but his backup doesn't show up in Windows. Leo says he should be able to manually mount the hard drive in the Windows 10 drive manager. He should type Windows Key + X. It sounds like Windows update broke the USB driver. If it doesn't see the partition of the drive, then it sounds like a driver issue. Maybe the drive software is doing something. Ed should re-download and install the driver.
Mike's home built computer crashes when he closes a program. The screen turns black and hangs up. It doesn't work again unless he reboots it. Leo says that's the hassle with building his own -- he has to eliminate each issue. Leo says the first thing to do is update his video card driver. He thinks it may be a bad driver. Leo says he can try booting to a USB key with Ubuntu on it and try to repeat the issue. If it repeats, he'll know it's a hardware issue. If it doesn't, he'll know it's a software issue.
Alan has an old Dell computer and he is having trouble using Windows 10 because of the video problems. Leo says that Windows should be able to automatically read the native resolution and adjust accordingly. For some reason, Windows thinks the aspect ratio is wrong and it's stretching it to widescreen. It could be a driver issue. It may also be the text file that describes the attributes of the monitor. It's called a monitor driver.
Linda has a Sony Vaio laptop and after a system restore, it's asking her to install PCI Modem hardware. Leo says the new version of Windows doesn't have the drivers for her hardware and is asking her for it. She should search Sony's website and download the latest drivers.
Brenda needs to upgrade from Windows 8 to 8.1. Leo says she definitely needs to do that. She says that Windows wants to uninstall Sentinel runtime drivers before installing, but she can't remove them because she hasn't installed them. Leo says it could be due to a program that she used in the past, or it was preloaded in her machine. It's probably from a trial antivirus. She's going to have to reinstall the trialware, and then uninstall it using their removal tool.
Alan has a problem where Windows 10 doesn't see his Plantronics usb headset. Saying the driver is corrupted. Leo says that there probably isn't a dedicated Plantronics driver for it, instead relying on the standard Windows USB audio driver. But it seems unlikely that the USB audio driver is corrupted. But it is Microsoft, so it may just be a matter of reinstalling the drivers. Leo also says that booting into Linux and testing it was a brilliant troubleshooting idea. The other idea is that it could just be a Windows 10 incompatibility.
Harry is reinstalling the Windows Vista OS on a friend's computer and now it's connected to "an unidentified" router with a local access only. He can't get online. Leo advises connecting via hardwire. If that works, then it's a setting that's not allowing it to get online. A driver may need to be downloaded as well. Getting the motherboard drivers from the manufacturer could solve it.
Richard has a Dell computer and he upgraded to Windows 10. It didn't work too well, though. It turned out that Dell doesn't support Windows 10 on his computer even though it qualifies. He downgraded back to Windows 7. Leo says that there's some hardware on the laptop that they think doesn't have a Windows 10 driver. But if Microsoft says it's ok, it should be ok. Leo recommends trying it again. Leo says that Microsoft is out of control in trying to get people to upgrade to Windows 10, though. They've even added it to the recommended updates portion of Windows update.
Bruce has a 2012 MacBook Air bootcamped to start up with Windows 7. He keeps getting asked to upgrade. Leo says it is a free upgrade until July 29th. Will he have any problems doing it with BootCamp? Will he need new drivers? Apple has created drivers for Windows 10. What about registering it? Leo says that your computer is entitled to it and when you upgrade, it should just install and activate.
