Why did my TV stop supporting 4K streaming?

Episode 1499

Richard from West LA, CA
Vizio 4K TV

Richard got a Vizio 4K TV and suddenly it says his TV isn't capable of receiving 4K, when it has been for the last two years. Leo suspects there's a "handshake" problem between the DirecTV box and the TV itself, and it's usually the culprit of HDMI cables. He should try replacing the cable first. But he'll have to be sure to have a cable that is certified for high speeds of 18GB per second. Amazon sells them for about $10. He could also try another HDMI input to see if that fixes it.

Can I change the font size in my DirecTV box?

Episode 1463

George from Santa Monica, CA
TV Remote

George is visually impaired and DirecTV has changed the font size of their menu interface to the point where he can't read it from his chair. Is there a way to change it back? Leo says that he can customize the program guide, and if he can't change the font size, he could change the screen size for the directory in the menu settings. There's a huge thread at the AT&T Forums that outline a lot of complaints like that.

Can I use an HD splitter with a 4K TV and a 1080i TV?

Episode 1403

Frank from Camanche, CA
Xbox One S

Frank recently got a 4K smart TV and he lives in a remote area. He has a limited amount of bandwidth per month, so streaming 4K content would quickly put him over his cap. Leo advises taking his TV off the internet and just use a UHD Blu-ray player. Then he can rent Blu-rays from Redbox or Netflix. Leo recommends the Xbox One S. It's a game console, but it also has a Blu-ray DVD player built-in for games.

Scott Wilkinson on Home Theater

Episode 1269

Scott Wilkinson

Scott has discovered that DirecTV will be broadcasting the Masters Golf Tournament in 4K on April 7-10th. It will be their first UHD broadcast. Leo wonders how much that signal will be compressed. Scott contacted DirecTV and found that they will be using AGVC as the codec. But he also found out that DirecTV won't say what the bitrate is. Leo says it's like Netflix doing the same thing, and it ends up being awfully compressed and leaves people with an inaccurate and negative impression of what 4K really is. Scott also says that high dynamic range will be missing as well.

What's a good internet option for a boat?

Episode 1112

Joe from Port of LA, CA
Boat

Joe wants to put his DirecTV on his boat. DirecTV says they can do it, but he doesn't believe them. Leo thinks that if he's in the harbor and there isn't a lot of movement, then it could be possible. But since boats move up and down according to the tides, Joe will likely lose that satellite connection often. It's not a good idea, especially for internet access.

AT&T Claims Buying DirecTV Will Bring Prices Down

Episode 1092

In their effort to replace their failed UVerse Internet and Entertainment packaging, AT&T wants to buy DirecTV. AT&T has also promised everyone that if the deal goes through, prices will drop. Leo says that would be a first. All too often, when there's less choice, prices go up. And with Comcast going after Time Warner and now AT&T going after DirecTV, he doesn't expect prices to drop any time soon. Quite the opposite, actually.

AT&T Expected to Announce Acquisition of DirecTV

Episode 1084

AT&T is expected to announce this week that they will be buying DirecTV. Leo says that with Time Warner being bought by Comcast after buying Universal, the landscape is getting smaller, and will leave little room for competition. This is not a good thing for consumers.
